Back pain after colon resection
Has anyone experienced lower back pain after having colon resection surgery? I had a right hemicolectomy 10 months ago and was cleared of cancer - no chemo or meds needed - but I am having increasingly severe back pain and spasms in my lower back right side.
Not sure if it’s related to the surgery.

So sorry you are experiencing this pain..before my open surgery similar to yours, the surgeon warned me that back pain can follow this type of surgery. Many nerves are in the area and can suffer some damage there…i definitely experienced it, and got help from my osteopath…took time to resolve…I already had some back issues before surgery, so identifying the exact source of the pain is tricky…it takes time and focus on healing with PT help. Wishing you relief soon !

3 Reactions@nycmusic Thanks for your feedback. It is helpful to know that I am not alone in experiencing this. I had laparoscopic surgery in the summer but soon after started having backaches when I stand or sit too long. Now it’s mostly in my lower back and I have spasms and pain when changing position or getting into my car etc. I also have had back issues related to osteoporosis so it does make it more complicated. But I have suspected it was related to the surgery.
All the best to you.

1 ReactionI would be interested myself. I had a right colectomy in Dec./25. I have lower back pain as well, but I did have it before the surgery as well. I have had several herniated discs L2-3 to L5-S1.

It is hard to figure out if you have had other back issues. Mine definitely increased after the surgery especially lower right. I found that gentle walks help. I will end up seeing my family dr and will keep posting results.
I have not had other worrisome aftereffects except for some bloating and distension which I already had before (gerd etc) which is why my doc sent me for that first colonoscopy which diagnosed my cancer thankfully.
I hope your healing is going well otherwise with no other serious aftereffects.

Thanks for responding. I don't have any other complications other than the
bloating and GERD. I do take walks as well although they aren't always gentle,
as I have Jack Russell pup, lol. He is 11 going on 4 I think.
I hope you are doing well in your healing journey also.

1 Reaction@leanne004 Sounds like we are on similar paths (except for the active ‘pup’ lol)
Take care!
