Low Back Pain Going into Hip and Leg

Posted by donaldjames1 @donaldjames1, Dec 8, 2020

I have had 5 surgeries/fusions on my back and neck. I have not been able to get out of pain. I have lower right back pain, goes into my hip and into right leg. They think it might be my hip now, but doctor took and xray of hip a d they looked fine, he said. So I am in a position where I'm on pain meds and dont know who to see that can help me. I need help be a use of the pain when I get up. I also have pain in between shoulder blades which is secondary to my right lower back. I have had MRI done and they do not see what it may be... I'm just tired of being in pain with no life. I know God sent me to this site to find out options. Can someone help?

@1kay2 So did you ever think of surgery.

@kstewart01 I will not consider surgery now because I have heard too many people who had bad experiences.

yes. We can offer ideas. I have had several spine surgeries from top to bottom. Find an MFR therapist - try a few. It is WELL WORTH THE MONEY!!! I will be seeing one for the rest of my life. A lot of your pain can be coming from the nerves along the route of your spine. You need attention to stay in alignment. You also need to help yourself. You CAN exercise through the pain! There are other things which can be helpful like figuring out if you have complications from what appears unrelated. I had gout and insulin resistance. Getting on medication for both reduced my pain and inflammation by 75% AFTER 30 years of being on this degeneration ride. Learn to LOVE your pain. Accepting that you can't do anything about it at a particular moment is critical. I have been on low-dose Percocet for 25 years. It is a lifesaver! Figuring out what triggers my pain - INDISPENSABLE! Having doctors who are supportive - CRITICAL! Realizing that EVERYONE struggles in this life is important too. Its maybe your cross to bear and helps you in some way which you have to figure out.

For some people (I’m one) pain is a part of life and mitigation to a tolerable level is my goal. I have accepted I will never be pain free and refuse to live my life in a zombie state due to over medication ( which is where I would be if I took everything the doc put me on). There is a familial component to pain: oa is responsible for most of mine as well as fibromyalgia. I get some relief through gentle stretching exercises, massage, water exercise, relaxation protocols but most important prayer.

Amen.
Good for you for choosing to be proactive in yout pain management & not rely on prescriptions. I can empathize completely. As soon as my surgery heals to the point I can do the gentle "mobility through water" classes, I'll be going regularly 🫶

Hi! I’m in the same boat as you are, sorry to hear that! I just had a SI Injection, have you tried that?

Yes, marijuana is legal for both medicinal and recreational use. For me, it does nothing for pain, and I just sit there like a bowl of cream of wheat.

@ellece same for me. I tried utilizing medical marijuana but it makes me feel horrible and doesn’t do anything for my pain. Maybe I wasn’t patient enough to try and figure out what strain would work for me. I just couldn’t get past the horrible feeling (like a vice around my head.)

I've had pain in my left hip and thigh for 5 or 6 years and have been to multiple doctors. All they can say is "physical therapy, physical therapy, physical therapy". After thousands of clam shells, bridges and planks, I'm no better than when I started. I take hydrocodone when it gets too bad. I just quit PT again after only 2 sessions because it took 3 days afterwards until I could function again. It seems like my young therapist thought I was a college athlete not a 78 year old woman with fibromyalgia. I also just stopped low dose naltrexone because there was no improvement of my pain after 9 weeks. It also made me somewhat nauseous. My PCP told me I would just have to live with it.

@bunstuffer Wow. I don’t mean to sound ugly but your PCP can just stick his “just live with it” comment where the sun doesn’t shine! That is inexcusable and hateful. I bet if your PCP had to live a day in your shoes then he would be looking for answers ASAP! Please try to get to Pain Management outside of Mayo. You’ve got to get a prescription for an opioid to help control your pain. Sending hugs and best wishes. ❤️

@kaki068 I love honesty. No one can tell me it works for pain, It makes a person high and zombie like a vegetable. I sw a lot in the 70s.

@kstewart01 I will avoid surgery until I can no longer function. Gentle stretches and heating pad for sciatica helps a lot.

@bunstuffer I am sort of wondering about your therapist, at Mayo? I thought I was in a training program and not PT.
It did not work for me either.

I’m tired of taking pain meds—47 years and counting. Next month, I have an appointment for a neurostimulator. This may also work well for you.
