Autoimmune hepatitis and shingles vaccine

Posted by humbug @humbug, 6 days ago

Is it okay to get the shingles vaccine if you have autoimmune hepatitis?

I did ask my doctor, but he didn't seem very confident with his response, so I would love to hear from anyone with AIH who might have personal experience with this.

I have AIH and I received the Shingles vaccine in 2022 with no issues whatsoever.

Hi, I got my first shingles vaccine in April 25 and due the second part in October. So long as you make sure they give you the non live vaccine you should be okay. (Live vaccines risk you contracting the illness)
Apart from being a bit sore around the injection site (I had pneumonia vaccine at the same time), I was absolutely fine and the blood test I had a few days later showed my ALT and AST had continued to decrease, so no impact on them.

Sorry, forgot to say I was diagnosed with AIH in Dec 24 and am on 5mgs prednisolone and 100 mgs azathioprine

I was also diagnosed in December, 2024 and am still waiting for my ALT/AST to stabilize. I'm currently on 20 mg of prednisone and 100 mg
of azathioprine. The enzymes have been fluctuating; they are still not where they need to be, unfortunately, but they are generally trending downwards. Great to hear that you are on 5mgs only! You are definitely on the right path.
My family doctor recommended the shingles vaccine because contracting shingles if you have autoimmune issues is not good. I've been reluctant to get the vaccine because I don't want to add anything that might confuse my immune system any further, but people responding to my post seem to not have had issues, so this is good to hear.

I feel that most of the new "vaccines" are simply money makers for a corrupt industry.
Though I did get the shingles vaccine and after the second shot became quite ill for a day with cold chills etc..

I think I'm one of the lucky ones as my ALT went from 1,553 to 17 in 4 months and I started reducing the Pred in Jan 25 when the Aza was first added. Yours will stabilize in time. For vaccines, I was told flu, pneumonia, covid and shingles. I've seen some people also say Hep A but that's not been mentioned to me yet. Hope you're not feeling too bad despite your levels still fluctuating 🙂

Great question—I have AIH too, and my doctor recommended Shingrix since it's non-live and generally safe even on immunosuppressants. Still, it's best to double-check with your specialist. Would love to hear others’ experiences too!
