Aspergillus with MAC

Posted by franthony @franthony, Feb 20, 2019

Has anyone else picked up aspergillus (pulmonary fungal infection) while being treated for MAC? MY ID doc has it on watch because it can't be treated while I am being treated for the MAC, due to drug interactions. It doesn't help that my local clinic threw out my last two culture specimens for fungus because there was not enough for AFB cultures even though I wrote on big Sharpie twice on the second one was for fungus. I also have colonized pseudomonas, and am not currently being treated for that.

If you do have this situation, how has your doc been handling it?

@crackergirl

Has anyone else had both of these and how did they manage to treat both?

Hello Crackergirl! Yes, I have been treated for both aspergillus and pseudomonas. I was put on nebulized tobramycin. It knocked it out within 30 days. I have been lucky, some people get these fungal infections and never get rid of them. Some drs choose not to treat these because they will sometimes go away on their own. I would suggest Googling each fungus and learn what meds can be used to treat them and then ask your dr about them. Are you coughing a lot as a result of these fungal infections?

I was put on 3 antibiotiocs and Rifampin for MAC in July had to stop all. I was very sick and my Liver test were very high. I just found out that I now also have Aspergillosis. I am going to a Pulmonology Dr. at UF Shands hospital in Gainesville, FL. I live in Ocala and it is near me. I am hoping he can give me some answers. Thank you for following up with me.
