Art for Healing

Kudos to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art for allowing physicians to write prescriptions for free admission to the museum. And kudos to Mayo Clinic for its art program. From the beginning, Mayo Clinic believed that art can uplift patients and foster healing. Whether it's Rochester, Jacksonville or Scottsdale, Mayo Clinic displays a wide range of artwork for patients. The Rochester site published a brochure for a self-guided tour of artwork. I live in Rochester and every time I'm at Mayo, I take the time to look at the artwork.

After a trio of stormy and rainy days doing this charcoal drawing seemed to sum things up. I recently had 2 cervical rhizotomies which has helped so I am able to do some artwork. Thankful as it helps me more than anything else most of the time.

After a trio of stormy and rainy days doing this charcoal drawing seemed to sum things up. I recently had 2 cervical rhizotomies which has helped so I am able to do some artwork. Thankful as it helps me more than anything else most of the time.

Oh, my, @parus. He's wonderful! You have such a lovely gift, thank you for sharing it with us. He does look a bit sad, tho, kind of like it might feel after 3 stormy days ! But, I love this fellow. And, what a marvelous gift to you for your cervical work to relieve you so you can do this, use your gift for others and yourself. Send us some more goodies, please.

BTW: One of the blessings I receive every visit to Mayo Jacksonville is the art work. It's such a healing, positive for me every time I go. I'm thankful. this is one of the wonderful aspects of the Mayo healing philosophy that's so special.

My story as a spine surgery patient has been told by Sharing Mayo Clinic, and I had a wonderful opportunity to talk about that in a Podcast that has been published today.

I was interviewed by Catherine Praiswater for a Podcast called "Your Positive Imprint" that is about inspiring stories. We talked about my experience as a patient facing spine surgery and how I coped with music and art, and how I learned to go forward in spite of fear, and then after my recovery, painting my surgeon's portrait. From what I learned about myself, I began to share that here on Connect to help other patients. We also discussed how we can learn from the stories of others to find meaning in our lives.

@ess77 Thank you for the kind words. As for giving it as gifts. I no longer do so as even framed it was never hung. Didn't fit their decor. Gee, silly me as that never occurred to me when giving them something they said they liked as a gift. I have no decor and get confused easily. Yes indeedy, silly me.

How ridiculous and unkind of whomever......In my opinion, this fellow goes in any decor. Shame on them....your talent is lovely and he is fabulous. Keep sharing with all of us...

@jenniferhunter, When I first opened this link, I thought, "Oh no, another celeb using his fame" and almost tuned it out. But, I am so glad that I listened . What an amazing experience this must be to feel those vibrations! and from such an unusual viewpoint!

I used to be a member of college and community orchestra in the violin section. Vibrations of living music are a beautiful experience.

@jenniferhunter, When I first opened this link, I thought, "Oh no, another celeb using his fame" and almost tuned it out. But, I am so glad that I listened . What an amazing experience this must be to feel those vibrations! and from such an unusual viewpoint!

I used to be a member of college and community orchestra in the violin section. Vibrations of living music are a beautiful experience.

@rosemarya Funny thing, I hadn't heard of him, but I like the story about how people with health issues were gathering around his music which he didn't plan. It just seemed to happen. I do like his music and think it will help inspire me when I'm painting. When you can get you head into that really creative space where things start to flow, it is magical. For many years I played in the percussion section of a large community band and we gave 6 weekly concerts of all new music. I loved to play the bells (glockenspiel) and xylophone and to be surrounded by music is wonderful... sometimes the percussion or horn section is a bit loud, so sometimes earplugs were in order and I could still hear it just fine. Violin is a really beautiful instrument. I had violin lessons in grade school, but then that teacher left the school, and there was no one to teach violin anymore. I also had piano lessons, so I could migrate to a mallet percussion instrument.
