Art for Healing

Posted by Harriet Hodgson @harriethodgson1, Oct 26, 2018

Kudos to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art for allowing physicians to write prescriptions for free admission to the museum. And kudos to Mayo Clinic for its art program. From the beginning, Mayo Clinic believed that art can uplift patients and foster healing. Whether it’s Rochester, Jacksonville or Scottsdale, Mayo Clinic displays a wide range of artwork for patients. The Rochester site published a brochure for a self-guided tour of artwork. I live in Rochester and every time I’m at Mayo, I take the time to look at the artwork.

@gingerw How is the zentangle going??

@jenniferhunter It is rewarding to see how professionals like Dr. Bishop combine left-and right-brained passions in their lives, making a well-rounder person!

@hopeful33250 Teresa, this is a beautiful video. Thank you for sharing it. I agree about the power of music to heal and it was a big part of helping me stay calm when confronting my fears of surgery. Using music and slow deep breathing in time with the music, I learned to lower my blood pressure and relax. Art and music are related this way and have the same healing power. Music can always help my mind escape when it gets trapped in worrying or if I'm upset. It helps me work though things and feel comfort at the same time, and retrains my brain not to be reactive about things beyond my control. What I can do is find myself by getting lost in the music.

@jenniferhunter Music has such power. Your choices of what you listen to can make a difference. When I trained racehorses, I kept classical music on in the barn, and trained my horses to go a certain speed by what I would whistle to them; no whips or yelling in my presence! Their favorite was Mozart's Elvira Madigan Suite. Likewise my cats and dogs over the years have responded positively to Gregorian chants and the music of Walela. And let's not forget how our memories are triggered when hearing music from "our past".

@gingerw Well I think I should start singing to my horse when I'm riding him because I can't whistle. I usually go out alone and horses don't want to leave their buddies and the place where they are always eating, so on the trip away from the farm he weaves around going slow, trying to stop and turn around because he wants to keep track of the mares…. then after we are far enough away, he magically speeds up because he wants to get home sooner, and I have to keep slowing him down. He's a gaited horse and can do a fast walk which is nice, so we both agree on that. I also make him stop and turn around going the other direction if he gets pushy because you can't let a horse run back home. I keep some carrots in my pocket and he is rewarded for stopping and standing there. I have sung to my cats and they were very interested and came closer to investigate. It did make them stop what they were doing and listen. So cool that you trained horses and they had great musical taste!

@jenniferhunter I have always talked to animals. Another thing to keep in mind is not only singing or talking, but to picture in your mind what you would like to see them do/accomplish. They think in pictures, and you may find them becoming very attentive to you, accepting you as part of the tribe.

Stopping by to share what helps me-even more so when things become more complicated. Creativity, for me, it healing in many ways. When the mind is calm the body can do its job better-this is my opinion. I would like to see more done in this area to help patients. Even adult coloring is helping some of my neighbors.
