Aromatase Inhibitors: Did you decide to go on them or not?

Posted by nanato6 @nanato6, Oct 12, 2018

Nanaloves: I’m about to start arimidex and just feel that the contraindications , bone issues etc. are overwhelming. I’m 70 years old, dodged a bullet I feel with zero stage DCIS but the follow up is pretty much no different then if it was more aggressive. I’ve just done 33 treatments of radiation and now they advise arimidex as a preventative. I’m not sure with the beginnings of arthritis and lower back. sensitivity already that I should take it. Anyone not take it and not have a recurrence within the 5 years.

Yes, I stayed on exemestane. Made sense for me and to be honest the side effects are easy to control with exercise and ibuprofen. I did just recently begin orolia bc of osteoporosis diagnosis and I had a total hip replacement. I am feeling well and feel the exemestane may keep the cancer at bay so staying on it until my 10th year

Hi jeannie! Thank you for the thoughts. You know, if I were much older, say 70's (I'm 59), I think I'd opt more for quality of life over quantity. That plays quite a bit into the idea of putting up with whatever side effects they throw our way until you find you're living to control the pain rather than just living. I think that makes sense. Have a nice day.

@mom23boys I agree with you 100%. I was diagnosed at 64 I'm 67 now. The doctors explained that the medication would lower my chance of recurrence by 50%. With a low oncotype score I figured I was in a pretty good place to take a chance. I will say that many days I question and hope that I made the correct choice and that works on my nerves.

@mom23boys Hi Peggie, With me it was just one ache after another until I couldn't take it any more. Making the decision to stop the medicine was much different than yours and easier because I was stage 1. It's amazing what people go through and they just keep plugging along. God bless you I'll keep you in my thoughts. Jeannie

Hi, have you gone to a foot specialist? I did and have planters fasciitis, I have gotten custom orthotics right around Christmas and I can say for the most part I am pain free now. I can't walk barefoot too good yet but I think in time I will be able to as well. Also vionic makes great shoes for it if thats what you get diagnosed with.

Birkenstock also are orthopedic and more than sandals. Orthotics helped me too as well as exercises for the feet and toes when I Tore my plantar fascia

@yahomich All my foot pain went away after I stopped the medicine. It definitely was related it took a few months to feel better after I stopped it.

......and it has been 12 weeks now and I still get it on the tops of my feet, making it very hard to walk in shoes for any length! But my feet are fine now on the bottom.
