Anyone using Amitriptyline HCL for Neuropathy instead of Gaba or Lyric

Posted by madmouse43 @madmouse43, Nov 22, 2023

A doctor has prescribed Amitriptyline HCL for my Neurapathy pain in my feet instead of Gaba or Lyrica. Does anyone have any experience with this. Like all thye others the side effects are many and can be serious (I realize that drug companys have to put any possible adverse effect in their drug instructions even if it only "smells funny"). But I am intereseted in real world situations before I start to take this med.

My doc tried me on that and I had a serotonin reaction. Scary thing!!. I am very sensitive to some drugs, so I'd suggest trying to get a few days supply and see how it goes. I am just taking flexural for neuropathy, back pain and tingling, pins and needles down my leg. I just take this at night so I can sleep.

@madmouse43 I take 25mg of Amitriptyline along with the max dose of Gabapentin ( 3600mg a day). The combo does help with the burning pain in my feet. I take the Amitriptyline at night and it does make me a bit drowsy. I hope you don't have any side effects and you find some relief.

I take Amitriptyline 25 mg. at night for the chemo neuropathy on my feet, and to sleep. I love it. No side effects, uninterrupted sleep and I can’t tell if it’s helping my neuropathy or not. I take 100 my of Gabepentan twice/day also. I really think only time will help . Good luck

Im on lyrica for nerve pains. When it wasn’t lasting every six hrs, nortryptilline was rxd hoping it would have a synergistic effect for nerve pains.
Yrs ago amytripptilline was ineffective on its own. A pharmacist specialist suggested nortryptilline in tangent. Just after a month it’s presently working!

I was on Gabapentin, then Lyrica. I switched to Tegretol and it works much better for my burning pain, with no drowsiness or brain fog (for me). I am on a pretty high dose now - 400 mg am, 600 mg pm.

I take Gabapentin and Amitripline both. The Gabapentin helps with the pain and the other helps you sleep. I have been taking them for 13 years.

@madmouse43 Hi. I take 30mg (3x 10mg) of Amitriptyline at night and it helps me sleep. I don’t think it really helps with the pain or anything but I suppose it helps enough that I can get some sleep. I started at a low dose (10mg) because I am very sensitive to medication. I worked up to 50mg but had bad blurry/double vision. It still affects my vision quite a bit but not as bad as it did at 50mg. I’ve tried many other medications and like this the best. I can’t take gabapentin because it sedates me. I tried Lyrica and had a VERY bad experience with it. I can elaborate if you want to hear more but overall, despite the blurry/double vision, I experience the least amount of side effects from Amitriptyline than the many other drugs I’ve tried. Good luck! Wishing you well.

I use Lyrica (75mg, twice a day) and 30mg of Amitriptyline at night. I think it all helps with my CIPN, but it’s definitely not a “cure”.

I appreciate the information. So far I have been lucky that my PN only very rarely effects my sleep. I take a 10mg Melatonin gummy which helps me get to sleep. I am at the very beginning of this med regiment. Frankly the side effects posted for all three of these (Gabapentin, Lyrica and Amitriptyline) along with sometime questionable effectiveness cause me concern .
