Anyone using Amitriptyline HCL for Neuropathy instead of Gaba or Lyric

Posted by madmouse43 @madmouse43, Nov 22, 2023

A doctor has prescribed Amitriptyline HCL for my Neurapathy pain in my feet instead of Gaba or Lyrica. Does anyone have any experience with this. Like all thye others the side effects are many and can be serious (I realize that drug companys have to put any possible adverse effect in their drug instructions even if it only "smells funny"). But I am intereseted in real world situations before I start to take this med.

Following a head injury was put on gabapentin due to extreme pain, nausea, etc while at Bethesda (then a Naval hospital, now Walter Reed). It worked great for about two weeks then my left eye wanted to see my nose. Was taken off and 30 days later back to norm. I take 25mg amitriptyline at night now for neuropathy from a spinal cord injury in 2020. It helps. I also take a kratom supplement that also assists with the pain. Between the two the pain and tingling is reduced. I still have numbness in feet and three fingers on left hand. My observations are it might take more than just one medication, but a combo. We are all different. I did try a number of “snake oils” prior to finding the above works. I also rub on my feet an arnica Montana gel and a CBD lotion twice a day. The CBD is a full spectrum. THC is not absorbed thru the skin, at least science today claims so. Over all a shotgun approach treatment.

What might be horrible to you, might not be to me ,as we’re all different.
I have discomfort, burning, numbness, tingling, pangs etc of different levels. Not always at the same time. My spinal stenosis causes the sensation continuously.
I also have SFN which is common with my underlying condition hEDS.
Im going to try some new supplements that sound promising.

Thanks @kd59 for that link! I never really understood flavenoids, or their anti-inflammatory properties, and Luteolin was never even on my radar. My daily smoothies will be MUCH different going forward.

You mentioned a Kratom supplement. I did a quick dive in info and caught many concerns. I didn't go deeply into it so don't know what or how bad. Have you had any problems?

I have had no problems nor do I anticipate any. I researched all prior to trying it and as with anything out there (was tired of snake oil) there are pluses and minuses, but the positive out weighed any issues of which were few. I do know it helps with the neuropathy discomfort in my feet.

Medications have side effects that can last a lifetime. So many people just take for granted prescription medications are safe. The truth is most have really bad side effects that may last a lifetime! Tinnitus (ringing of the ears) is a common side effect and most often lasts a lifetime. Read before putting anything in your mouth. Read the fine print. And remember there are rarely quick fixes found in prescription medications.

I agree with you so much thar is why the question. My podiatrist is suggesting a foot wrap for 30 minutes that should have 3 months relief. We are just waiting for the VA to approve. I forgot what it is called but I will post with details and results
