Anyone sensitive to Beta Blocker?

Posted by byebeta @byebeta, Aug 10 11:14pm

Gonna set this up. I was without a car for many years about 4 or 5. I had to pay a lady to take me to docs. appt. It was fine till she had her grandson move in with her and he was (I'm putting this nicely), stressful and obnoxious. Well, not having a car and him always with us, stressed me out every time.
Then I had a bad neighbor who lived in the duplex next door, she would play at night in the am hours till daylight boom boom base junk, I could feel it through the floor up into my brain as well as hear it, she also did it in her car. This added to the stress. Then had a falling out with gamer friends and that added to the stress.

So on top of that, I ended up needing eustachian tubes in both ears. The Ear docs nurses would take my BP wrap the cuff so tightly it would read ER then they redo it a second later on the same arm and it'd read 140 upwards.

Ear doc said he wouldn't do the surgery without seeing a cardiologist.

Cardiologist put me on Metoprolol succinate er 25mg. Totally regret taking it.

Ended up 3yrs later wanting off it after I figured out it was causing me these side effects:

Vivid religious nightmares and bad dreams.
Disassociation that sent me into panic attacks.
Anxiety.
Panic attacks.
Fatigue
Not really there feeling
Headaches
Made my RLS worse every night.

I told the cardiologist all of that he argues it doesn't do that.

He finally agreed to take me off the junk.
Told me I could, "Just quit, since it was such a low dose."
Thankfully I did research. And suggested a taper, his taper was this, "one week 1 whole pill.... It was more of a normal person's taper. There was more to it than that can't remember it all.

Then I talked with my PCP and he told me, "1 week whole pill. 1 week half pill. 1 week half pill every other day and stop."

I did the PCPs idea. Ended up with withdrawals and in the ER very HBP.

Went back to cardiologist and cardiologist started me on Carvedilol 12.5mg 2x a day, ugh.

Carvedilol side effects I went through and am dealing with:

Low heart rate in 50s at time low BP in the 90/60's.
Headaches
Nightmares vivid.
Dizzy
Pressure in the head at times and worse when I'm crying that lasts for days with added foggy headed, unable to focus, concentrate and at time remember.
Depression
Anxiety at time
Panic attacks at times
Cold extremeties. (Can't even touch fruit that's being in the cool section of a store where the most is sprayed on them)
Oh and one day it felt like I was gonna hallucinate and dizziness which sent me into a panic.
Was on treadmill one day and i ended up seeing black in right eye and leaning towards the arm of the treadmill. If felt like either my heart sunk, stopped or I fainted.

I want off this junk permanently. I'm type 2 diabetic diet controlled.
Also get kidney stones dealing with an issue at present.
I got 4 docs visits left in this year for my insurance. I get 14 or 15 visits a year.

I've also got a very messed up circadian rhythm. And this pill give 3 to 4hrs of sleep a night, then I'm back to bed and hour later and up at 3pm or 4pm. Tried everything to fix it, but no pharma.

The doc also cut my pill back to 6.25mg 2x a day.

I told my doc again of the symptoms I'm having, he doesn't believe that the betas do all of this.

I've never had an issue with my health in the ways that this beta junk has caused. So I know it is the beta and I want off it.

I'm worried about withdrawals. I'm trying to lose weight hard to do when ya sleep your day away.

I was prescribed 5mg of Buspirone as needed by PCP. Haven't taken it at all, scared of being stuck on it too.

Will an antianxiety medication help with withdrawals from tapering off carvedilol?

Also my holter the 2nd time came back good and so did my EKG no arrhythmia like the 1st time before I was on any HBP. This is another reason I'm thinking it was all stress.

OMG you poor thing…I thought I have health issues but after reading what you’ve gone thru I feel like I’m in good health.
I find a lot of the doctors don’t believe any side effects from these medications. They should further be educated. It’s as simple as going on the medication’s website that list the possible side effects. I know everybody is different and some lucky people don’t end up with any side effects, but then there are others that are affected
Nowadays, I know how difficult it is to find a new doctor. You might have to wait months. It’s really discouraging how bad the health system has got. I wish I could give you advice on what to do other than if your doctors still continue to not believe side effects then maybe you should look into trying to find new doctors.

YES ! And thankfully, I was able to kick it. I got off that pill just a week ago. I was on Coreg AKA Cravediolol . That evil pill was the worst thing I have ever done to myself, and I don’t think I will ever trust the Doctor Who gave it to me again because when I presented him with what was happening, he said not possible I dug deeper, spoke to several pharmacists found out that the swelling above my knee was definitely from the pill, especially since it happened within three days of me starting, and that it was one of the very serious side effects but of course I didn’t know how to kick that pill so I was on it for another month. During this time it felt like someone was screwing railroad ties into my elbows. My gums started bleeding after three weeks on it never had that before, and never had a problem before. The headaches were insane the lack of energy unreal I slept most days away sometimes till four and five in the Afternoon/evening. At this time, caring for an elderly ill parent who didn’t live in my home and having to feed them on the d Daily. I had severe stomach pains. I felt like my body was trembling. I was constantly nauseous. Now I know some people do fine with it, but we are not all cookie cutter. My body overreacts to Medication’s. Let me apologize in advance. I will not proofread this and I use voice text so anything that is incorrect improper English improper grammar, not spelled properly. IM not responsible for that as I see it put IM In capital letters above, as I said, I am not responsible. There were a whole host of other things. My vision got very bad at times the pain in the head was unreal my blood pressure which all the information says should not have been affected was higher than normal. Go figure that one when I’m normally 116/76. My overnight Lows For my heart rate Often dropped to the 40s on and off all night long, Often my vision became blurry. Now that I am off the pill almost all of this has worked itself out so far except for the swelling above the right knee, which has gone down a little bit oh, and I’m not limping anymore most days I was having pain in that leg and limping suddenly now it’s fine. Can anyone tell me is it difficult to get an appointment at the Mayo Clinic? I really need a second opinion because they scheduled me for a procedure without even knowing all of my blood work and pre-existing. That made me a little uncomfortable the area where I am in South Carolina I have switched doctors often before I moved here. I had doctors for 15 and 20 years at a time unless they retired or moved away. I have been misdiagnosed many times and I was told in 2008 because I showed up with liver disease at the time I was a bodybuilder no no drugs natural I wasn’t competitive but I could have been. I was told in 2008 I had 3 to 5 years to live. And here I am. My reason for being here in this group is that I have been told that I have tachycardia and the first day that I met the electrophysiologist I was told I needed to have an ablation. But he had not seen any of my blood work because to my charts that I have were not merged by the same hospital so they could only see up to 2018 and I was in the hospital in April and the results from all those tests need to be considered, including the heart monitor that he didn’t see that I wore for 27 days. So I’m not quite sure how this decision was made. I got excited thinking I was going to come off the medicine and didn’t ask a proper questions but now I am ready and I need a second opinion, anyone who can help with any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. 💞🙏🌷

It’s funny, not funny. I was told the same thing that I was on the lowest dose of the one that he put you on twice a day I was put on it twice a day. I only took it once a day because I know that my body is overly sensitive to meds and yet I had the worst reactions. You’ve read that my previous post I can’t believe I went through so much of what you went through almost had to stop and think was I reading a post I made so much of it compares to mine. I hadn’t finished reading your post yet I’m about to, but I am so sorry you’ve gone through this. I was also told by the doctor that I could stop you’re on the lowest dose you can just stop everything. I read told me how to step down and I did it. It took me 2 1/2 weeks almost 3 weeks to get off of it because I was doing it wrong. I would go four days without and then take one which really was just sending my body into a tailspin. I didn’t know this. The first time I tried to stop after 36 hours I started to have a tachycardia episode of 220 bpm. It lasted about 20 minutes. I was able to get myself to the hospital. I’m only 3 miles an ambulance wouldn’t have made it out of the bay and gotten here in time so I thought I was also told that it couldn’t kill me stop the pill cold turkey and it can’t kill you! The tachycardia events can’t kill me. Because they were happening and I was afraid when is the next one or could it be the final one. I desperately need to get a second opinion one that is accurate informed and explained to me in detail, not rushed in less than 30 minutes. Some of the cardiology appointments were 10 minutes tops and it took seven weeks after being in the hospital for three days to get an appointment with a cardiologist, and then that was canceled after sitting and waiting for an hour to see the cardiologist. I will keep you in prayer. I hope everything works out for you. I’m going back to read the rest of your post. I would love to talk to you more, especially since we have so much in common as far as the symptoms from that pill I wonder what else we have in common

@ruth36 I had to dig deeper than just the medication‘s website. I had to look into COMPLAINTS about The particular medication. And I also asked AI to give me a list of the rarest side effects because most of them don’t list that. Not to mention that information may not be up-to-date, but I only utilize medication from the Information from the medical journal, the Mayo Clinic, and the Cleveland clinic. I don’t source information from anywhere else. I found it to be inaccurate and incomplete.

I hate beta blockers and they hate me! I can’t remember the first time someone put me on them, maybe 2007? I felt like I was carrying an extra me on my shoulders. Asked the cardiologist if that was common and she agreed that it probably wasn’t the best for me. It’s suppresses adrenaline and I pointed out that I was racing sailboats at the time and need adrenaline! Thank God she was a sailor too so she knew what I meant! We switched to a calcium channel blocker and I have had much better success with those.

A later cardiologist put me on the lowest dose of Metoprolol even though I said I did not tolerate them. I called in four days later when I said my heart rate range from 36 bpm at the bottom of a grade when I was out walking up to 60 at the top. I said basically that is dead! Went back on the calcium channel blocker with no problem.

I did come out of two open heart surgeries on the beta blocker again. Standard procedure and not too much to be done about it. However as soon as I passed the three month check-in echo I was able to go back on the verapamil. I hope this will continue to work for me!

Hope all gets better and comfortably under control!

to byebeta (@byebeta) You should not cut metoprolol pills into quarters. While some metoprolol forms can be split in half along their score line, cutting them into four pieces ruins the medication dose. It can also destroy the slow-release design. This causes the drug to release too fast. Why Quarters Are Unsafe -Uneven Dose: Quarters break apart and crumble, so each piece has the wrong amount of medicine. Broken Release: Cutting extended-release pills Metoprolol ER (succinate) into quarters ruins the special coating. Fast Release Risk: A fast release of a beta-blocker causes dangerous drops in heart rate or blood pressure.

I am sensitive and allergic to all of the Beta Blockers except name brand Bystolic. Took me 4 years of trials to find one that I could tolerate.
