Anyone participating in the Tapestry DNA Sequencing Research?

Posted by dazlin @dazlin, Oct 19, 2020

if you have volunteered or declined to participate, I'd like to here your thoughts. I was on the fence, very undecided, yet I decided to go ahead to do it. I have a few low grade health problems im dealing with , and really dont want to hear anymore. That said, I realize this testing may be of great value at some point. Also its strictly voluntary and can be declined at anytime. I sent mine in today.
Whats your thoughts??

What I learned from my participation, then more reading: if you are going to be tested, tell family members ahead of time. After you get your test results you might need to tell them the results. For example, you might have a gene mutation that your relatives need to know about. They will be more receptive if you have previously told them you were getting tested. Some relatives will not be receptive anyway.

Wow, I just received the results and they show 2.3% South Asian. The other 98% is European. I did anscestry testing and that was not shown at all.

I was very happy to sign up for Tapestry offered through Mayo Clinic.
I consider such testing to offer great value for the future for many reasons. Database technology allows us to collect and analyze a great deal of information.
This will be a powerful tool for medicine and will help your children. And learning if one has a gene for something serious can be very important.

Of course, they tell one about one's ethnic composition as a way to make it interesting for us. In fact, I was surprised to learn I was 3% Persian. That was fun because I actually spent 5 months in Iran when I was a student in the early 1960s. Maybe I met a relative????
Otherwise, Northeastern and Northwestern European background was not a surprise.
It makes reading history books about Europe/Persia/China more interesting! Your ancestors were there!
It did nail me on "restless sleeper" because I travel a lot at night in my bed!

Hey, I took the Tapestry DNA test not too long ago, and I’d like to bring something up (I don’t know if this is the right place to do it).

There was a decent inaccuracy with my heritage results, and I assume it’s because Tapestry’s database is still relatively small.

I’ve seen a few people in this board taking about how they were surprised by their results, and I had the same reaction. The results told me I was 12% Sardinian. My parents both took a DNA test through Ancestry after I did mine through Tapestry and neither of their results came through with Sardinian on them. Just to be sure, I retook the test through Ancestry and my results came back saying I had no Sardinian ancestry.

I’m not trying to blast Tapestry, and I am really glad Mayo reached out to me to take this test, it was a great experience. I’m just saying if you are really curious about your heritage and ancestry and want to pursue it, maybe take a test with a different company for more accurate results.

From what I can tell, the rest of the stuff Tapestry tested is accurate, it’s just the heritage stuff that appears to be a bit inaccurate.

These are my Ancestry results VS my Tapestry results

I too did the Tapestry DNA test about a year ago. It told me I had 3% Persian (from Iran) ancestry. I do not question that since I know my grandparents were from Austria-Hungary (grandmother was Slavic and grandfather more Hungarian). Reading history, there was a lot of traffic going back and forth between Iran and Europe many centuries ago, so it does not surprise me. I actually spent 5 months in Iran back in 1961 so I wonder if I hadn't met a long lost relative!
Helix also told me I was a restless sleeper and that is accurate.
For more in depth information on ancestry, I know people who have paid and participated in other such services and gotten much more in-depth information than Tapestry - which is dedicated to medical research requiring health profile data. The ancestry info is just to more easily attract participants.

I am part of Tapestry as well. Unable to find my results. Need to look for them! Been a while!

I am… I was excited to do this because I feel like the last twenty years I’ve been chasing what my body continues to go through. I’d love to have some answers and to also know for my daughter’s health as she gets older…
