Anyone have experience with doxepin for sleep?
What results have any of you had with taking doxepin for sleep? Also, how has it worked combined with Gabapentin if any have tried that?

Doxepin at low doses of 3-6 mg per night works well for many - it improves sleep maintenance and duration, more so in those over 65. It doesn’t tend to cause daytime fatigue. It is non habit forming. If you are over 65, stick to 3 mg per night. Late night eating increases daytime drowsiness. Watch for dizziness which can increase risk of falls. As I recall, but look this up, I believe you should not take it if you’re lactose intolerant or have urinary retention (like benign prostate hypertrophy)
Doxepin and gabapentin work by different mechanisms so it’s ok to take them together. They will have a more potent effect than either one alone. So be more wary of confusion and dizziness and fall risk. Perhaps even start with half of a 3 mg pill (if they can be cut in half). I assume you have a doctor if you’re on gabapentin. So be sure he/she is informed. If your gabapentin dose is over 300 mg, I would wait and discuss with your doc before proceeding due to increased risk of side effects. Avoid alcohol and other sedatives not prescribed.
I'm about to start Doxepin tonight! I've been doing Ambien with no ill effect for 20-some years but now the insurance company is suddenly worried that it might be affecting my health! (I'm an active, 77-year-old man who looks forward to his nightly Ambien like a dog looking forward to a friendly scratch between his ears. I've got peripheral neuropathy and spend a lot of time poring over my archive of insoles, running shoes, ointments, and potions. Sometimes I walk with my recently acquired brace. I don't really need a change in my sleep meds but my doc is asking me to make an earnest attempt at Doxepin. Any observations, advice, alternatives? Thanks!
