Any non fracture members?
I guess I’m just looking for some encouraging words. I was diagnosed in February and still working through the different stages of grief/loss. I seem to have more days stuck in depression/sadness.
So, was just wondering if anyone on here has dealt with OP for quite a while and hasn’t fractured? I know you can fracture even if your scores are osteopenia range. I feel like everyday I’m just waiting for a fracture to happen. Im exercising 6 days a week and watching my food intake. I’m just hoping as time goes on this feeling lessens. Sometimes I’m not sure if it’s the diagnosis that’s making me sad or just the fact that I’m getting older, I’m 60, and reality has finally set in.

1 ReactionI was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2019 at age 63. I went through all the emotions you describe -- devastation, fear, shock ... My condition has worsened since then, down to -3.5 spine T score in 2023, but incredibly I've never fractured with no osteoporosis medication anti-resorptive nor anabolic so far. I take all the supplements and follow a Mediterranean high protein type diet. I managed to stop the progression of bone loss with bhrt I began 2 years ago and even gained back a little bmd. I'm certainly not advising against medication because of my own experience though and would not rule it out if I fractured.

3 ReactionsDon't despair, I have had osteopenia for years, and have managed to keep it in check with vitamin D and strengh training.
Although the DEXA scan wasn't close to a borderline osteoporosis, I was immediately offered biphosphanates. I found it strange, I have heard that some doctors discuss a year's reprieve - let's have a sean at 12 months, and if your DEXA reading is still the same )or even better), just keep doing what you are doing. If the results are worse, you accept to go on medication.
BTW, if you exercise, don't forget to eat more protein.

That is great news. I wish that menopausal women weren't still faced with being denied hrt due to the legacy of the flawed women's health initiative study. Your story is an inspiration. Thanks

2 ReactionsAge 68, no fractures, diagnosis was 3 years ago (so I probably had osteoporosis longer than that). I have travelled the world on my own on grants for photography and website development. Two summers ago spent a week on horseback camping in Mongolia as well as walking through some pretty rough areas. I single-parent two grandkids too and work as a teacher, and I am definitely not superwoman. Don't despair! Watch your balance, get used to keeping an eye on where you step, and remember that getting older means you know a lot more than you used to. My dad used to say that if anyone remembered what it was like to be young they wouldn't talk about wanting to be young again.

8 Reactions@chrisco Have you been diagnosed with the cause of your chronic pain? That would help people on this forum provide information that might be helpful.
80 here and no fractures ... to date. Still active and even snow skiing and have survived 2 non skiing falls in the last 6 months. Was on Actonel for 7 years, followed by a 13 year drug holiday. Then took Fosamax for 2 years and when I had to find a new endocrinologist, I had a Reclast infusion in December 2023. Since Reclast seems to work much longer than the year most doctors prescribe it for I've been holding off on additional meds. Plan to have another Reclast infusion at the end of this year after a new DEXA and bone markers. That hopefully will give me another 3 years to decide what to do next, assuming I'm still around.

5 Reactions@daisy17 I have arthritis of the facet joints osteoporosis that’s why I’m a big fall risk. This has been going on for 8 years. No one can diagnose me. I’ve been to so many doctors as a sad situation I gave up driving and I’m only 64. The arthritis of the joints are rubbing bone on bone it is getting worse and worse every day. Do I up on my pain pills? I don’t wanna be addicted. I need advice. and I’ve had every nerve ablation and shot that is out there. I hope that helps a little thank you

3 ReactionsI too was diagnosed in February, with osteoporosis. I'm 65, no fractures, no symptoms. I'm getting over the fear and doom feeling. (the age fear comes and goes tho, 😬 lol) I've decided to do the best I can to care for myself with exercise, food, meditation and supplements. I'm researching daily on how to do those things. Taking any of the medication for bone building is off the table for me at this time. Thanks for sharing. Good luck, Rae

5 ReactionsI am 73 years old, was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2003, and never suffered any fracture. I was on Fosamax three times before (for 5 years at a time). I am not on any medications right now because I am on drug holiday with Fosamax. Tried Tymlos, but stopped after 4 months because it had horrible side effects for me, including losing my ability to walk. I am now doing Onero, taking AlgaeCal Plus and magnesium glycinate, and taking protein shakes. Will see what happens. By the way, I had REM scan last January which showed that my bones are actually quite strong, despite my DEXA results (my last DEXA scan showed a -4 for my femoral neck).
