Any luck using Tylenol and ibuprofen for joint pain?

Posted by lindaadele @lindaadele, Jun 27 11:16am

When I saw my rheumatologist she was ready to give me another medication for PMR. Not one medication has worked for me and I’m really afraid to try any new medication’s. I was wondering if any of you had any luck with these over-the-counter painkillers for their PMR? any information you can give me would be very very helpful! Thank you !

Thx for confirming. Do you find the need to take anything?

I am hearing different information and would like to hear more input. I am down to 2mg a day for a couple of weeks now. My NP told me I should/can take 2 Tylenol arthritis 650mg up to 3 times a day. Can I take ibuprofen or aleve instead or will that interfere with the prednisone?

The Prednisone Pharmacist (Dr Megan) did a video about this a few days ago. As a pharmacist, I think she is very knowledgeable about drug interactions. Check out some of her other videos about PMR too.

Generally, we are cautioned against taking any NSAID while on prednisone unless YOUR OWN doctor approves.
You can easily get information on how these drugs interact, and opinions in this forum, but only your doc knows of other conditions you might have that could influence the decision.
My own doc approved (very) occasional use once I was down to 2mg of prednisone, but only if I took with food and a Prilosec (antacid).
Be careful. Good luck.

Have to agree with checking with your doctor regarding taking OTC pain relievers. But in my case both my rheumatologist and GP gave me the ok to take Aleve or Tylanol with my prednisone. Actually my GP at my last wellness visit suggested that for the 5 days before a scheduled surgery if pain in hands or knees bothered me Tylanol Arthritis would be ok. I will definitely check with rheumatologist at next visit at end of month regarding that info, also one piece of info I left out regarding being ok’d to take otc is that the only medication I take other than prednisone is a statin for cholesterol.

If it were me and I had questions about the amount of medication‘s that I should take I would speak to my NP and ask her any questions that I have if I’m not comfortable with the information that the NP gave me. Hope my information helps you out.
