Any ideas on what is the cause of my sudden hair loss, severe thinnin
Quick Bio- Total thyroidectomy 13 yrs ago, Hysterectomy 6 yrs ago, Triple positive BC 5 yrs ago with 3 mos on Taxol chemo and over one year on Herceptin . Total hair loss then but hair came back full and healthy- eyelashes never did). Anastrazole daily until 8 mos ago, Allergic to all meat (yes it’s true- but watch daily protein intake. 65 yrs old and now you can actually see through my hair suddenly the past few mos. I always had a lot of hair even post chemo total hair loss and hair was fine. Suddenly it feels like chicken fur,less total hair than what a toddler would have on her head, stringy and broken??? Also, I am not stressed out and am only on thyroid replacement. Thank-you!

Try Toppix. I use it for the balding area at crown of my head. Available in many shades on Amazon. It's hair powder and covers up the pink scalp showing through.
Yes! I’ve been on letrozole for 5 months and have lost hair (now very thin all over), gained weight (15 pounds) on formerly slim body , and developed edema in feet and legs that has also resulted in spider veins, varicose veins, and purpura on legs and feet. Oncologist is unsympathetic. Will prescribe one of the other AIs but says I might be changing “nuisance” side effects for “serious” side effects. Discouraging!
I’ll look into that. Heard about it on tv but then , you know, the brain just moves away from it and it’s lost
I can sympathize. Also gained over 10# in 1 week but was told exemestane doesn’t cause it, just redistribution of fat to the waist and difficulty loosing so don’t know why the sudden gain. Only able to stop the gain by doing 24th hour liquid diet. I have recently started with the edema in lower legs and feet so haven’t discussed with oncologist yet - next visit I guess unless worsens, then will send note for callback. Have already been on Anastrazole and don’t really want to try Letrazole which is only other option. So I stick with this, argue about the side effects and explain if I’m depressed, it’s because of this medication and adding another with same side effects isn’t logical.
Good luck.
There are dermatologists who specialize in hair loss--there's one just 3 miles from my house. Find one, if you can.
PS--IMHO your medical oncologist is incorrect. I had a bad reaction to 1st two AIs that I tried, and am just fine on 3rd one. Yes, another AI might be even worse, but it might be miles better. You don't know until you try.
Maybe you should stop taking this drug.
Have you asked your Dr about it? If it grew bk after treatments and it's now thinning, It's poss sthg new going on? I had triple neg breast cancer & after treatments, surgeries, etc I lost my hair, it came back, exept eyebrows, I recently started taking otc vitamin Nature's Bounty-ultra collagen boostet. My main issue was my skin thinning, brusing easy, etc.. My sister told me about it, it's for hair, nails & skin. After 2 wks I've noticed a diff. My sistet's hair's gttg lngr & strnger after 6 wks! Ck w/ur Dr 1st. Good luck & God bless you!
I wonder if you are allergic to all meat whether you have been tested for lime disease?
My hair thinned considerably last year (mystery reason) and I take Nutrafol which is a vitamin supplement for hair loss. I have been getting new hair growth so I think it works.
@peggydobbs
I agree with you, the AI's all react differently with different women. Some side effects completely intolerable, while other side effects are doable to live with, although very annoying.
Can I ask you which AI you are now on and finding it's fine? Bilateral mastectomy in May 2025. Low oncotype score. 1 positive lymph node (we all know it only takes one to find a new home).
I am thinking of asking to change...but waiting to see my new breast oncologist first next month.
The current one I was seeing seems to have no vested interest in my concerns or questions. She refers me to to other specialties, like cardiology, for ongoing elevated blood pressure or endocrinology for a new diagnosis of osteopenia. She also had no answer to my question we all ask after our diagnosis and post treatment is over "how will I know if I have a reoccurrence?". For that question she referred me back to my surgeon who I see in December for my 6 month follow up. Does this sound like appropriate post mastectomy care? Or am I expecting too much from her?
