Any chronic cough patients?

Posted by adkindt @adkindt, Nov 24, 2024

Hello, chronic cough patient, Ajay through one round of testing at Mayo. Back in December for 2 GI procedures. If anyone has had the Ph test and/or manometry for chronic cough, I'd love to hear your experience. Thanks

My brother went to a great Respiratory Dr after many treatments that never worked and he suffered until he started getting injections in tummy every 2 weeks for this allergic reaction. Non stop cough my poor brother & he’s okay now! See a Respiratory Dr & ask about allergy or vagus nerve but mention injection on tummy every week then every / weeks etc. A nurse comes to hive it but anyone can be taught to do it themselves. He’s a new man. God love him. Keep searching allergies bad immune system cough so bad. It’s to build immune system. Immunotherapy not sure but Respiratory Dr figured it out without allergy testing.. miracles happen. Not sure if that’s your issue but keep searching.

@cherbear - what was the injection your brother has gotten in his tummy that helped his coughing?

Hi, @agikam - if you've not already, you might check out this discussion on silent reflux in the Mayo Clinic Connect Digestive Health support group:

-Silent Reflux or LPR
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/silent-reflux-or-lpr/
So is your cough lessened or gone with taking the vonoprazan (Voquezna) and the liquid aluminum hydroxide and magnesium trisilicate (Gaviscon), agikam? How did your doctor come to the diagnosis of silent reflux?

Through various articles I found, silent reflux can cause a host of issues, including chronic cough, post nasal drip, and even mimic asthma. I hope the next tests I have prove silent reflux, then get more effective treatment than OTC meds

I cannot take predisone
I get very anxious
No one knows what causing dry persistent cough
Dr do not check if viral or bacterial
Think allergy related as it started during mn very dry snowless winter 2024?
Dr on tv said that long winter 2024 many got this and that he did not recommend any treatment
He actually said “ nothing worked”
Bizarre
To me this is a common ailment which needs a experienced
provider
Acupuncture helps
Problem- I can’t take many drugs with many ingredients
A calmer steroid?
Allergy med is singular now

Hi, @scy - I get it that you just don't enjoy coughing.

If I understand correctly, you've tried various things for coughing like azithromycin (Z-Pack liquid), acetaminophen (Tylenol), prednisone, warm beverages, cold and warm packs, omeprazole (Prilosec) and acupuncture. Have any of these treatments brought you some relief for your coughing?

Had chronic cough 1 yr
Never had before
Dr said many had from long dry snowless winter
Ribs hurt
No bronchial
Had RSV vax
Was on zpac liquid
Tylenol prescription
Now predizone because he thinks it’s more of a allergy issue ( I sweat fr this )
Just don’t enjoy coughing
Drink warm beverages
Use cold and warm packs and acupuncture
Seems like a easy thing to treat
Not
Don’t know how they tell if it’s allergic viral or bacterial but viruses can reoccur

Hi, @adkindt—welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. It's a great idea to see if you can chat with others who have gone through the chronic cough clinic at Mayo Clinic. I bet there are others on Connect who have gone through chronic cough clinics or similar elsewhere, too.

I personally had a chronic cough, and the doctors I saw tested me 12-13 years ago for multiple potential causes of cough: gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), asthma, sinusitis and allergies. For a while, a gastroenterologist trialed me on GERD medication. But he finally determined I did not have GERD. The end diagnosis for me was adult-onset asthma.

I'd like to introduce you to some members who have mentioned the esophageal pH monitoring test and may have some information for you on their experiences: @auntnanny @jenblalock @tdrell @rebecross @t98. I'd also like you to meet @windwalker.

adkindt, other members have talked about the esophageal manometry test you said you have upcoming in December. Please meet @jackielb @rstel7272 @margaretmary, who may have some information on how this test goes.

How long have you had a chronic cough, adkindt? Is there anything that temporarily brings you relief?
