Amikacin

I’ve been nebulising Amikacin for about 4 weeks after having 4 weeks of iv Amikacin ( along with other drugs- I’ve got Abscessus). I lost my voice initially for a full week and now that it’s back I’ve developed a really sore throat all on one side. Has this happened to anyone else?
I’ve had a throat swab taken and there’s no infection.

That seems common. My spouse was on the IV version for 4 months and then moved to the inhaled version. He’s been on it for about 2 months. He takes it in the late afternoon and is hoarse with a moderate sore throat for about 16 hours each day. Sometimes it helps to use tea or cough drops.

Thanks for your reply. Will give the cough drops a try. I’ve been swallowing a spoonful of honey after each session .

Hi Polly
I have Abscessus too. I have been on Amikacin for about 2 months. I lost my voice, was very sore and irritated in my esophagus and chest so I went to 3 days on, one day off...the ID doc said I could even go to one day on and 1 day off but the 3 days made a big difference. I'm taking it with Nuzyra which I think is recommended. I'm already improving. I haven't added the 3rd drug...I'm resisting that one...lots of side effects. Hang in there!

Yes three times a week will prevent the voice hoarseness.

I was wondering if your insurance covered Nuzyra?
Mine did not.
