Amikacin

Posted by pollyflinders @pollyflinders, Jul 14, 2025

I’ve been nebulising Amikacin for about 4 weeks after having 4 weeks of iv Amikacin ( along with other drugs- I’ve got Abscessus). I lost my voice initially for a full week and now that it’s back I’ve developed a really sore throat all on one side. Has this happened to anyone else?
I’ve had a throat swab taken and there’s no infection.

Has anyone lost their hearing or have ringing in their ears while on IV Amikacin?

I did. It caused some perm hearing loss in one of my ears. The drug is audio toxic. So your doc should be monitoring.
Should have had an initial hearing test and then one when off of the amakacin.

I was taken off of Amikcan due to the ringing in my ear. I don’t know if the ringing will go away. I would like to know if anyone had the ringing sound and if it went away after taken off of the Amikacin.

The ringing went away. But had some perm hearing loss after.

Not sure what they did but I know they filed a bunch of paperwork about my conditions, and I got all 3 that I needed, and it came directly from them.

I also have Abscessus, and treatment started last week as an inpatient. I got home Tuesday evening and continued 2 IV drugs at home…Amikacin and Imipenem, and oral drug Linezolid. My Amikacin IV takes 4 hours to complete. My ID DR called me yesterday and he is trying get another drug approved in oral form to replace Amikacin. Hope so. 4 hours is draining. Plus I had to have a PICC line inserted, taking care of that too.
Hope today is a good day for everyone.

Thank you! No side effects yet. I’ve been on a lot of antibiotics the last several years, had 2 sinus surgeries and lung infections. Local pulmonologist never ordered a bronchoscopy. I finally ask for a second opinion and Ohio State pulmonologist did a bronchoscopy and culture results were M Abscessus. There are only several antibiotics that are resistant so ID Dr is looking for my options so couldn’t try the BIG 3. Also, the 4 hours of Amikacin is followed by Imipenem that takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Thankful Amikacin is only 3 days a week.
Are any of yours by IV? How long have you been in treatment?
Thank you for your reply.

This is my second time with IV home meds and delivered via a double lumen PICC line. My medication order is 600 mg three times a week. The peak is drawn every Monday 1/2 hour after I finish my medication that only takes one hour to infuse. I have no idea what your doctor’s orders are, but I think four hours is excessive.
My medication is in a small translucent easy pump by Braun. It is the size of a tennis ball approximately. I walk around with it in a fanny pack. I hope you don’t have to just sit there in a chair with an IV pole. Amikacin is good ‘stuff.’ I also take Impenimum-Cilastatin and Tygecycline. I was on all three of these meds for Abscessus Massilence and now have great sensitivity again for Abscessus subsp. abscessus.

Hi, Is Amikacin by IV and the other 2 oral? My Amikacin is 1,500 mg 3 times a week. My
ID Dr is in the process to change mine to oral (not sure if Amikacin or another drug). Hope it happens soon. As of now the Imipenem 1,000 mg will continue as IV, takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours twice a day.
Take care.
