Approaching gastric bypass surgery

Posted by liver2007 @liver2007, Sep 27, 2022

Well it’s a rainy Tuesday as I make my to Jacksonville with a hurricane behind me. Tomorrow is my pre op day for my gastric bypass which is scheduled for Thursday. It’s finally here. That was a long 3 weeks of a liquid diet. All liquids all the time, but I did it. With a little weight I lost before I’m down 30 pounds. I feel a difference. I was never hungry nor did I have any problems.

I’m excited, happy, and a little concerned. But I keep thinking it may get worse for a bit, but then there’s going to be a new me. I’ve been carrying this old, tired , worn out me for decades. It’s a shame. There’s little photo evidence of my existence with my children and grandchildren, so many things I couldn’t do. I was embarrassed and never comfortable. No more. For whatever time I have left
I will be out there playing, enjoying myself, and family. I can’t wait!!!!!

Hi @liver2007 I can feel your excitement! I’ve not had the procedure done myself but I’m friends with 2 people who have and it had such a positive impact on their lives with feeling so much more energetic and healthy.

Let’s make this the year of getting you back in those family photos with some new adventures and making memories with your grandkids! You’ve worked hard to get this far, so best wishes for continued success on your journey to better health and weight loss! 🙃

You will let us know how everything goes, right?

Hey friends my bypass surgery is tomorrow. I’ve had abdominal surgery before but nothing like this. I’ve done my research and I know what I’m probably in for with the recovery but man I can’t help feeling sad, scared, but not wanting to back out since it took me 9 months to get here.

Hi, @cdschuldt - wow - tomorrow is a big day with your gastric bypass surgery coming up. I believe that jitters before a major surgery are very normal. I spent about an hour on the phone with a surgeon the night before a prolapse surgery (that included hysterectomy) working through my jitters. I had everything lined up and really thought seriously about backing out.

But I knew when the surgeon pointed out to me that I'd already outlined a number of reasons for going ahead that the most logical thing was to proceed.

I'm tagging a few members who have talked about bariatric surgery to come support you as you face your surgery tomorrow @wr61 @turberg @cntrlcoastgirl @christawho @joysmiley64 @dlc1953 @deere5010.

I had bariatric surgery 4 weeks ago ( roux y ) I was amazed on how easy the recovery especially pain wise was . I made sure I followed all the medical recover procedures: eating, drinking schedules and walking throughout the day.
I am so glad I had this surgery. I only wish I would have done e it sooner.

Surgery went great but my pain control is still a big issue. Ran out of my pain meds yesterday and I just want to cry because of all the pain I’m in. He also found a hiatal hernia and repaired that as well which is making it hard to take deep breaths still.

@cdschuldt
Glad surgery went well. Have you reached out to your team about pain. I know providers are reluctant to over prescribe pain meds, but worth asking about.

How is the liquid diet doing?

Liquid diet is going well I did reach out to my surgeon’s team and he has no openings and is in surgeries all week. I think I may have to reach out to my Pain medicine Dr to see if they can help.

Hi, @cdschuldt - glad the liquid diet is going well. I'm sorry your pain is not in good control. I've found personally that pain colors my whole world. I've had to persist after surgery to get more help with pain control. I think it's your right as a surgical patient to get help with postoperative pain.

I've only made a phone call before to get help over the phone with post-op pain and never actually went in for an appointment. Will your surgeon's team consult with you about pain control over the phone? Or might your pain doctor, since you mentioned you have one, as you may not be at your most mobile to go in at this moment?
