Almond Milk and GI symptoms from additive carrageenan

Posted by mikeynorth @mikeynorth, Apr 18, 2022

I thought I was doing something healthy by substituting Almond Milk instars of dairy milk. I am a 7 heart bypass survivor and a senior.
I am writing this to warn people about my experience.
I felt just terrible and didn't know why, until my wife researched what I had been consuming lately. It turns out that Almond Milk was the culprit.
I had nausea, severe stomach pain, bloating and gas all at once.
After 1 to 2 days it disappeared. I had the worst sleep of my life.
I just wanted to pass this along.
You think you are doing something good for yourself and Yikes, that was a mistake.

I drink Silk almond milk exclusively and it is free from carrageenan. I was so relieved when I checked after reading your post. I love the Dark Chocolate mixed with a half and half with the Original flavor. Yum! Hope you can find the Silk brand near you.

Be careful and google Gellan gum, too in case Silk has it. It can cause problems with people as well. Usually guar gum and Locust bean gum are ok for most folks.

I drink Almond Breeze I looked at what’s in it. There isn’t any carrageenan in it doesn’t bother my stomach and has more calcium then milk. I don’t tolerate cow milk but everyone is different so have to take everything into consideration for your body. Good luck

I used to drink 2% milk and changed to Low Fat many years ago . I then switched to 30 calorie ( no 35 cal ) Almond Silk -- Never felt better . I am now nearing 85 years young .

I drink the Silk Chocolate Protein Almond Milk which does contain Gellam Gum, but it doesn't irritate my stomach like Carrageenan, which is horrible for our digestive tracts. It's a thickener made from red seaweed.
