Hi, all, do you mask when outdoors when air quality is moderate or just when bad or not at all?

I have recurring aspergillus showing in my sputum tests results. I was tested for allergies, both through blood tests, and skin and tested positive for mold. My allergist wants me to have the allergy shots desensitizing for mold but I am not convinced I can do it. There is not much research on the topic although allergy shots have been an approved method to fight allergies including mold. What I found out is not proven but mentioned as possible increase in IgE and that could worsen, possibly, bronchiectasis. If anybody here was treated with this method against allergies and had also bronchiectasis please respond.

I have been on allergy shots for the past 63 years, and started when I was 2. AM now going on 69. I absolutely can tell you allergy shots have saved my quality of life. 3 times I have tried to get off and wind up at the emergency room, and could not breathe. I get mold and mildew in one arm and trees /pollen in the other once per month. I was able to come off for the 4 years that I was in college and moved away from the Mississippi Delta. Moved to a higher elevation and not in a low-lying area. Moved to Atlanta, and not 6 months later I was in the emergency room and back on shots. It makes a difference in the South with the terrible humidity and breathing issues as well as pollution and pollen counts throughout the year.

Thank you 1fancydancer. I found an article in American astma and allergy journal that says the allergy shots might increase IgE levels which might worsen bronchiectasis. I am going to NJH in September and will ask a question about the shots. I am glad they help you though. I have MAC and BE and need answers before I start the desensitizing. Thank you again

I have had MAC once in 2012 and BE since 2017. I was taking the shots during the time that I got MAC however have only had it once since 2012. I constantly pick up one bacteria or another. I think that it is the immune problem with corticosteroids that has caused all of this to occur as I age. Been on Corticosteroids since 1994 for my asthma. As long as I take them my asthma has disappeared. I quit taking them and asthma comes roaring back. I guess I traded no asthma for over 19 years for an immune deficiency. I am a gardner with a passion and will not give it up. I wear two N-95 mask and gloves when I work and sometimes trade the N95 in for wearing a respirator. I am picking up environmental bacteria from the water the last 3 years. Dr thinks it is from taking a shower. We have a filter and with this last infection I am now wearing one N 95 while I shower with the shower door open and the bathroom window. Also leave the door to the bathroom open. Love my allergy shots.

I think it’s great when you get quality help from a functional medicine doctor. I believe it helps but it’s also very expensive and not everybody can afford it. But I am really happy for you that you can use this kind of help with benefits to your health

Thank you. Yes, I feel fortunate to be able to invest in a functional Dr. I think everyone should be able to choose our direction of care and be covered by insurance (.even as a self-pay) and file our own so the Dr. doesn't have to file insurance. Maybe one day the industry will learn how to work together!
