For mild/moderate COPD, does Mullein tea/tincture help clear lungs?

Posted by minnie528 @minnie528, Sep 5, 2024

Background-RLower lobectomy 8 months ago Stage 1A NCLC w/mild to moderate COPD/Emphazima (not being treated for). I guess I'm still having post surgery effects from lobectomy as far as right rib discomfort, chest tightness, but experiencing some shortness of breath depending on what I'm doing, so I guess I attribute that to the surgery, but also the COPD. I was a smoker for decades, & I still smoke 4-6 a day after no success with patches. Has anyone used Mullein to loosen mucus & to clear lungs, help with breathing etc? You can use it as a tea or a tincture. I want to try it, but am wondering for COPD, have you tried it? I want it to be safe, but effective

I think Mullen is safe . But you can check with your Doc about your situation . I use the tea , I make it carefully and steep it correctly. Never drop a tea or tea bag into boiling water . The oils and the useful properties will go up in steam if you do . Use Very hot water . Not boiling water . Let the tea or teabag have its time to steep. It is amazing that so many people in there common everyday rush , are not able to steep a tea . If you are dumping it into , or pouring boiling water on it . You will have no idea if it works or doesn’t. It helps me bring up phlegm. I am
on 4 ltrs 24/7 and have been for 3 years . I use otc Guaifenesin 1200 time release tablets . I take one morning and again at night 12 hour tabs. I drink 2 cups of Mullen tea a day . I have not had to use a nebulizer yet !

I use Mullein extract everyday and have been for almost two years. I found it very helpful in loosening up the phlegm in the beginning. This has decreased somewhat although I am diagnosed with severe COPD. I have found that keeping it under the tongue for several moments lets it seep into the blood stream and into the lungs better then letting it get digested by the stomach. Not sure about that, it may simply be a Placebo, but, whatever works.
Good luck.

Hi, new here as of now. I am stage 4 on 3 liters. My son turned me into Mullein recently and my pulmonologist said he supports me trying.
I have researched and now I can finally reach out to someone who has tried different varieties. My question is: has anyone tried to Steam the dried leaves and place head over bowl with towel? And why would smoking the leaves be bad?
Thank you

@nannyof17 I think at this point smoking anything is not going to help . That is just my opinion . Crystalena

Yes I have and still do use Mullen occasionally. It’s quite effective as an expectorant.

@jimhartford I use it also. My question do you use it only when you are congested, or as maintenance also?

@nannyof17 I use the liquid 2 or 3 drops in a glass of water and it works.

@nannyof17 Tincture and tea are the most common ways of using mullein. If you do tea, make sure it is filtered through very fine membrane, or in a tesbag. The leaves contain fine hairs which, if inhaled, are very irritating. Burning mullein may well destroy its helpful properties, and may even create some dangerous compounds, so please don't do it.

#1 recommendation Stop the 4-6 cigarettes per day. Have you tried the nicorette gum as a cessation aid?
Have not heard of Mullein tea for loosening secretions but don't think it would be harmful. Additionally, increasing fluid intake helps as well

@kndaustin71 there is also a CBD tincture that can help with the stopping smoking - helps to take the "edge" off - worked great for me as I quit - was a 40+ year heavy smoker. I am trying the Mullein drops now, just started (I have read the tea does not work as it is absorbed thru the stomach) it was recommended to use tincture drops.
