Adult Coarctation of the Aorta

Posted by deccle @deccle, Apr 24 7:35am

Hello- my 47 year old husband was just diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta. We saw a cardiologist while in the ED at Mayo this weekend and are awaiting a call to get an appointment with adult congenital heart. It’s hard to wait and not know next steps. Anyone else diagnosed as a an adult who would be willing to share their experience? Thank you

Hello @deccle, I'd like to invite @ch246cf10 to this conversation as they posted about having a coarctation of the aorta repaired when they were a younger teen. Waiting for a call for an appointment when facing a new diagnosis is never an easy situation to find yourself in. Did the ED give any indication on their thoughts of the severity upon your husband's release? https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coarctation-of-the-aorta/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20352535 - this states that the course of treatment is dependent upon the severity and age at which a person is diagnosed.

If you are comfortable sharing, was there an event that triggered the ED visit related to your husband's diagnosis?

Hello,
My Coarc. manifested itself by 13 years of age. Middle School Nurse noticed some blood pressure problems. I cannot comment with an adult diagnosis. Maybe your husbands Coarc. is not as severe and mine was. I don't know. There are so much better treatment options today than there was for me in 1978. From my understanding a Coarc. condition usually comes with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve and risk of Aneurysm both of which I have been diagnosed with and treated for. Your doctors will probably be all over this as things move forward. Continue to post if you want to know more specifics about the procedures I've had.
All the best.
