Acid Reflux: Prescriptions not helping: What works for you?
I have acid reflux. The prescriptions I was given are not a big help. The Over the Counter meds are better. I am careful about whurpat I eat and drink, but I still get symptoms. I burp, I belch, I have bad stomach aches, I get light headed. What do you do?

"You'll only be as well.... as your doctor is good & knowledgeable"
is what I believe. Too bad we don't have better physicians...

1 Reaction@gigi4 how was you tested to find you had a bacterial, yeast and parasites?
I went to a functional medicine doctor who tested me with a variety of tests, breath test, blood test, body fluids and stool sample. If you want to find a functional medicine doctor, the website is ifm.org and you can find one based on city and state where you live.
I accidentally stumbled across this. I was cooking for my Mom who has celiac disease so I cooked gluten free an ate what she ate. I noticed I had stopped taking my medicine. I just didn't need it anymore. I also lowered my carb intake during this time. I don't know if it was the gluten free or the lower carb diet that did it, but once I start eating either carbs or gluten again, I get my reflux back. I mentioned this to my doctor and he said that other patients reported a reduction in reflux symptoms by a low carb diet.
@mmilich
I had acid reflux. I went gluten free, dairy free and sugar free and it helped tremendously! When I went to the doctor, she tested me for other possible causes as well. Results showed I was gluten intolerant, sensitive to dairy but can eat sheep and goat milk products, and that sugar also was causing me symptoms. So I switched to stevia when I wanted to add some sweetness to my coffee. I also switched to a low acid coffee that is tested for toxins. The coffee can be ordered from a company called LIFEBOOST. That helped as well! My doctor also put me on a prebiotic for awhile followed by a co probiotic to build the good bacteria back up that was destroyed. Again, that helped too. I continue to follow this way of eating and have had success.
Also, I forgot that omitting alcohol was also very helpful. Now, I will have a cocktail on special occasions only.

5 ReactionsThank you for sharing all this extremely important information with me.
@gigi4 I have been on everything recently voquenza it’s a wonder it’s working great
Idk if it’s really that good long term but drinking milk works if you’re looking for immediate relief. I’ve been told (by the same person who told me that milk would work) that eating a slice of bread can work too.
If you do go with the milk, it might be good to avoid full fat milk (I remember reading somewhere that the fat can irritate people’s stomach lining)

Kefir is helpful. I drank 4 oz. daily. Greek yogurt also helps as it is full of probiotics - a very healthy and helpful ingredient to improve the gut biome.

2 ReactionsOmeprazole 40mg is a prescription-strength proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and conditions with excess acid production. I have Crohns with stricture and ulcers and barrett's. I now take it 1st thing in morning before coffee. If I miss it I will have heart burn by next evening. It works for me and Mayo and my local GI. This could be a discussion with your Dr.
