Abscessus - not coping well with treatment

Posted by pollyflinders @pollyflinders, Jul 23 7:57am

I’m currently being treated for m Abscessus- 4 weeks on iv in hospital and now oral meds and inhaled Amikacin home. All started well but now have awful nausea. Finding everything so difficult-especially eating! Any suggestions?

Has your Dr prescribed zofran for you? Worth an ask. I was offered it for nausea when I went on cresemba. Trader Joe’s had ginger chews which I used a lot of, I also used seabands which use the pressure point on your wrist. If the seaband concept works for you, you can also look into Emeterm which looks like a watch but provides a pulse like a tens unit to help with nausea. Otherwise, small bland meals just to keep something in your stomach. If you can take meds with or without food, I opted for eating something first. Were you advised to take probiotics?

I can’t have Zofran unfortunately - something to do with qt and heart! I’ve got cyclizine but don’t find it particularly effective. I do drink ginger tea and eat a little when I can but really struggling!

And yes I do take probiotics.

I know what you mean. My doctor told me to try probiotics and it helped me some. Maybe it'll help you too.

Check with your doctor, but perhaps a diet of easy to chew and swallow and digest foods like soups and broths and pudding and applesauce and yogurt and mashed potatoes and protein shakes and ice cream and even baby food would be helpful until things improve. Good luck.

My husband was on Zofran and it helped for 4 months. Unfortunately he had to stop all meds 2 years ago, and he is still doing okay. Good luck.

You didn’t say what drugs you are on. 2 of the iv drugs I was on initially caused 24/7 nausea. After a month Dr stopped them. They were Impenium and Teflaro. Don’t know which of the 2 were the culprit but no more nausea since stopping them. I am now on Amikacin IV, Nuyzra and Sirturo oral
