About Laser Photocoagulation treatment

Posted by satimis @satimis, 3 days ago

Hi all,

My left eye has been diagnosed as MD (Macular Degeneration) suffering slightly blurry vision, but no other symptoms found. Yesterday I have had Laser Photocoagulation treatment which took about 45 min. After treatment no vision improvement is found. The blurry vision on my left eye is still existing.

Please advise how long shall it take for the improvement of the blurry vision on my left eye?

Thanks

Best Regards

Has your retinologist explained to you why he prefers the laser treatment rather than eye injections? Hi decabea,

Thanks for your reply.

I have been treated with Eyelea injection twice. The 2nd injection was made on August 20, 2025 but without improvement on the blurry vision of my left eye. I don't have eye floaters.

Also I have been treated with ultrasonic test to find out whether my macular vein has been oocculated. Fortunately it is not.

I'll take another follow-up visit on Sept 12, 2025, next Friday. What questions shall I ask my care doctor? Thanks

Regards

I’m scheduled for the 9 treatments but my understanding is that it only slows down the progression.

I am in no way an expert on treatment for wet macular degeneration. My experience is my only qualification to comment on this subject.
Both my eyes have MD. After more than a year, the left eye is as of now, clear with no bleed. My right eye however now is diagnosed as Geoghraphic Atrophy, .
I see my retinologist on a regular basis and hope there is no further deterioration of my left eye. It is my understanding that injections for a bleed should continue as necessary. Also, I have never suffered from floaters

The laser treatment is for stopping leaky blood vessels not to restore blurry vision. The newer gold treatment for Wet AMD is Eylea and it takes more than two treatments to work. Again, the treatment in both cases is to stop progression to blindness from leaking blood vessels not restore vision.

Treatments for wet AMD — like Eylea injections or sometimes laser — are designed first and foremost to protect the vision you still have. In some people, especially if treatment starts early, vision may look clearer. But if there’s already bleeding or damage, the main goal is to stabilize things and stop it from getting worse. The blurriness may stay, even though the treatment is still doing its job.”

Hi all,

Lot of thanks for your advice and input.

I have excellent eye-sight since youth and up to now 86. Before the incident I don't need eye-glasses to read. I can read clearly the 32" display of my desktop computer without eye-glasses. Neither I need eye-glasses for seeing distant vision. Although I have progressive eye-glasses but seldomly using it.

Now my left-eye vision has gone. My right-eye still retains clear vision. My left-eye can still recognize human faces at short distance, about 2 arms length, but unable to read.

I suspect this incident accountable to using wrong eye-drops. About 8 months ago I saw the advertisement that an eye-drops, which was sold OTC, can slow down the aging of eyes. After finishing the 1st bottle, there was nothing wrong discovered. Then I continued using the 2nd bottle and had this incident, diagnosed suffering MD (Macular Degeneration) on my left-eye. Fortunately my right-eye is still in perfect condition. I applied the eye drops on both eyes. Now I have stopped using this eye-drops.

I'll inform this incident to my doctor in my next visit, on Friday, next week (Sept. 12, 2025)

Bottom line: No FDA‑approved or OTC eye drops prevent AMD, and there is no solid evidence that ordinary lubricating or allergy drops, multivitamins or common OTC pain medicines cause AMD. Observational studies have linked prescription vasodilators, oral beta‑blockers and high‑dose anticholinergic drugs to modest increases in AMD risk, while NSAIDs may even be protective

AMD is a progressive disease it has 3 stages- early, intermediate and advanced.
With regular eye exams it is detected, but without eyes exams, it goes unnoticed until you cant see well. It is not caused by an incident or eye drops. The causes of AMD are multi-factorial- genetics, age, smoking, obesity, etc. There is no one reason or causation.

Hi sjsl,

Thanks for your further advice and link.

I have no idea of the stage of the disease on my left-eye. It can still view pictures on the 32" display of my desktop monitor, only slightly blurry, but it can't read written document clearly. Fortunately my right-eye is still in perfect condition.

Please keep us informed on why your Dr switched to the laser after the two injections. And what preventive measures he recommends for the good eye. You do have historically good eyesight overall That's really good.
