96 year old woman has itchy scalp and neck

Posted by woojr @woojr, Sep 4, 2025

My mother has itching on her neck and scalp that comes and causes her a lot of discomfort. She's had two visits to family doc and given some ointment and told she should put ice packs on itching for relief. It's been about six weeks and we're waiting for an appt with a dermatologist. Mom takes a lot of vitamins and supplements. I've asked her to stop them in case she's had an allergic reaction. I've read a lot of internet on this but mom won't stop with the vitamins. Has anyone had vitamin itch?

John, your mom reminds me of my mom with her internet skills and happy way of avoiding the negative.

The PCP might be willing to order labs that would be ready by the February appointment. I'm not sure why the dermatologist didn't just order the labs. It is completely within their purview. There are simple vitamin deficiencies that can cause migrating itch and several autoimmune disorders. I wonder which this doctor thinks might be causative.
You might call the PCP and request that she order labs. In spite of your wonderful efforts, you mom has been itching too long.
My mom developed intrinsic factor deficiency and was unable to absorb B12. She figured it out on the internet and asked her doctor for a B12 injection. He did the testing first and sure enough.
We have lucky genes. longevity plus.
Bless you wife who does the laundry with such attention. You have the dearest women in your life.
Best wishes for the new year to all of you.

Yes, I have been itching and a bad case of hives for 8 months. You talk about pain, yes.
I went back to April and found I had a doctor told me to take this one brand of calcium. I did a double check on things in it. Maltitol syrup is a form of grain alcohol that I am highly sensitive to.
I stopped it and it is now slowly getting better, but I feel it will take 2 to 3 weeks for this to get out of my body.
If she has allergies, take a look at medication’s and over-the-counter things she is taking. If you come towards you, don’t understand look it up.
I hope the best for your mother things are getting better for being
