5 months post TKR

Posted by aml01 @aml01, Jun 25, 2023

I’m having a lot of swelling and stiffness. I work 40 hours a week at a sit down job and at times am not able to exercise at work and too exhausted from work, walking while knee is swelled and stiff to exercise everyday when I get home.
I know and can take up to a year. But is there any relief before then?

Yes I think the walking bike (called the Alinker) would work for you.
I found that any weight-bearing activity just made my knee worse so swimming and this bike were a great solution
You might also be suffering from some nerve damage, which I also had and it was treated with Pregabalin (Lyrica). Don’t know what I would’ve done without it.

I was wondering how well a knee sleeve would work. I’ll have to get me one.
My coworker said it was about 2 years for her. And I believe it will be same for me also.
Thanks for all the info

I am 19 months out. It is definitely better but not pain free. Yes the sleeve
Helps a lot. I don’t always know
What will aggravate it but do know if I’m going for a bike ride or hike a sleeve helps. However my time
On the trail is under an hour, as the rest
Of
My body keeps
Falling apart. Ugh! Haha

Hello,
I'm going to start with. I am 13 weeks out on my right knee and 6 weeks out on my left knee of total knee replacements.
Well I returned to work this past week and I am a table games dealer and my bosses have been wonderful with working with me on whether to sit down or to stand.
So I've been trying different things. I did sit down in the first part of the day and by halfway through my legs were extremely swollen. We do get breaks every hour and I was walking on break but it was still swelling on me, so yesterday I tried to stand all day and that actually helped and it didn't swell as bad. When I get home from work I ice and I use my compression calf pumps I got off of Amazon and those have been lifesavers. I hope this information could help anybody that's out there.

I'm sorry you're still having pain & stiffness, but I can relate. Hopefully, we'll both improve-and soon! I can't imagine ever doing this again, although I know what you mean. My left knee is as bad as my right one was, & I planned to have a left TKR in the future. However, because of all the problems I experienced with the right TKR, I really don't think I could do this again. At least you've completed both TKRs, now you just have to heal, & I'm sure in time you will. It's very hard to be patient though!

Maybe try an under the desk bicycle. You could pedal while you work.

My right TKR was 5 months ago, & I'm having pain in my posterior knee with flexion & extension, & when I flex my knee it causes pain in my right SI joint. I have good ROM, & my surgeon says he can't find any problem on my xrays or exam, but the pain is getting worse, despite ongoing PT. Anyone with a similar problem?

I experienced pain in my lower back and SI joint in my 9-10 months out from my TKR. It's normal I think however PT did actually help some. They massaged a muscle I can't remember the name in my butt area (sorry) and it really helped the SI pain. I also had pain in my tendon that runs down the entire side of my leg and it made my hip hurt. All this subsided around the 12th month. I still get sore and stiff and wear a knee sleeve if I do lots of walking, mow the grass or need extra stability for things. It will keep getting better once everything finally settles. It just takes time. My ROM is good as well and my Dr. says everything is good,. Also, sometimes PT aggravates me and then I hurt for 3-4 days after. I use Voltaren for swelling 3 times a day or so and that really helps me as I can't do oral nsaids like most can take them.

Hi @alexalee, I moved your discussion and combined it with an existing discussion titled: 5 Months Post TKR, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/5-months-post-tkr-1/.

I did this so you could read some of the other members' experiences 5 months after their knee replacements and meet members like @aml01, @roxxxy2626, @continentalred and many others discussing their recovery and setbacks after knee replacement surgery.

@alexalee, how does you knee feel when you are walking? You mentioned pain when you flex and extend, but your range of motion is still good? How painful is it at rest or after activity?

I am one year post op
Prior to this I had pain bending due to the Bakers Cyst but I do think it has dissolved now. (but only recently)
I typically had good range of motion from the beginning but as I said the Bakers cyst behind the knee was limiting
I had a certain amount of nerve pain until about the 6 month phase

It really does take about a year to recover

Hi, & thank you. In response to your questions, I have pain in my knee with walking & standing, but it seems to be related to pain in my right SI joint, (same side as TKR), which I never experienced until after my surgery. My ROM is good, but my knee is very stiff, particularly with walking, which is difficult to do. I don't usually have pain at rest, I do have mild to moderate pain after activity, but it dooesn't last long.
