Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?

Posted by carnes @carnes, Jun 11, 2018

It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

I also live in Phoenix.
Would you please share the name of your Mayo dietitian and nephrologist?
Is there for a support group for kidneys at Mayo?
Thank you.

Pam - my nephrologist
at Arizona Mayo is Mira Keddis, The one area of my life that I’m pretty assertive about is my medical care, and I am wild about this doctor. I think she’s great!

Seems as if you are going to be a vegan. Are u allergic to chicken or turkey? Those are ok for CKD. I make vegetable soup and like it.

Hi, I,too, am Stage 3 CKD. My doctor hasn’t stressed diet except for the usual healthy meals, no caffeine or carbonated drinks. She stresses mostly to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.. That has been difficult for me since I have arthritis.
Good luck to you!

@poppy67 That seems to be a common response from our doctors when they have a CKD patient. Have you been referred to a nephrologist, yet? If not, I would certainly push for that, plus a consultation with a renal dietician, Diet can play the biggest part in controlling our disease progression.

While many of us live with additional health concerns plus the CKD, watching our intakes of potassium, sodium, sugars, phosphorus, calcium, and protein in particular is important. Yes to avoiding anything but Tylenol, even topical creams containing aspirin [although I do take an 81mg aspirin each morning for blood clots prevention] Clear carbonated drinks like Sprite of 7up are okay, To address your arthritis pain, some people have used CBD creams or gummies, but be careful of overdoing that so it doesn't interact with your current medications.

Getting to the root cause of your kidney disease and addressing that will also help you not progress. Does any of this sound right for you?

Hi Poppy67 , I'm Johnmacc. Do you know your egfr # and your creatinine #? That would better inform your stage 3 ckd. Reduced protein, depending on how much protein you currently eat, would lighten the work on your kidneys. Low sodium and a few other things might help stabilize you. May I ask your age?

Thanks Ginger. Yes, I see a nephrologist and she is wonderful. I have been able to get my numbers from 3 to 2.8. I am working more and more on diet. Thanks for your tips.
I had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and had gold injections at age 14 when nothing else worked. Some of my doctors, including my nephrologist believe that might be the culprit.I’ve also taken lots of meds my whole life. I took up to 12 aspirin daily as a child and many cortisone shots.

Hi. You just need to ask your doc to run a blood test on it. Tell them you want your creatinine level and egfr #. That stands for globular filtration rare. These two things will help your doc determine what your kidney function looks like. And yes, keep your sodium level low. Your doc or nephrologist can guide you along. Hope this helps, I'd be happy to be a sounding board for you along the way. John

@poppy67 Long term use of certain medications can have a cumulative effect on our kidneys, as can diabetes, high blood pressure, and lifestyle choices.

Being our own advocate is crucial in getting to our best health possible. Good for you for having the knowledge of your health history, even as a young lady! We just never know what may trigger our current conditions.

I do have nephrologist that I have been seeing for over a year. The only thing that bothers me is I have been asking for a dietitian that can help me with my diet. I haven’t gotten one yet. I have been on line to see what foods are the best. He told me to stay off pork and beef. I have. I only eat turkey, chicken and tilapia (the only fish I like). I do watch my intake of sodium, potassium and phosphate. Once in a while I have 3oz of beef. All my meat is either air fried, roasted or baked. I don’t batter or salt. I use lemon juice and Mrs. Dash seasoning. I also eat frozensteamable vegetables. I have lost almost 70 lbs. I just wanted to know what other people eat. The internet has me confused. Not on what I’m eating now. Some says I can have, let’s say for example block cheddar cheese and in another web site says you can’t at all. Anyway, I just want to know what everyone else eats, so I can get a better view. Mayo Clinic is a reputable place. Oh, I also am a diabetic and I have diverticulosis and have to have that consideration in my diet. Thank you for listening.
