Dr. wants to increase my 300mg Wellbutrin xl to 450mg. Safe?

My Dr. wants me to go to 450mg to boost my lack of motivation and still some depression issues. I’ve been on 300mg for a year or longer and never had any side effects at all. With that said I’m am really struggling to get myself to take the extra 150mg pill, for the last 7 days I get my 300mg and 150mg ready and stare at them eventually taking my 300 and putting the 150 away telling myself I’ll start tomorrow. I’m extremely nervous about the seizure possibility. I have no other risk factors, never had a seizure, don’t take another meds that would increase my chances, no alcohol or drug use, no eating disorders but I still just can’t get myself to do it. I guess my question is how safe is 450mg? Am I just overthinking this?

Not a doctor, but I've been taking Wellbutrin for awhile so I researched this because of a similar concern to yours. The odds of a seizure for someone with no previous seizure disorders is 1 in 1,000 for 300 mg and goes to 1 in 250 for 450 mg.

The risk is front-loaded, meaning if a seizure is going to occur it will almost always happen within the first month after starting or increasing the dose. After that, the risk goes way down until, after several months, it becomes almost zero.

that is a good question, i am not a doctor but myself was bumped up on a drug when in my mind i did not need the increase. i am going to fight it to have it lowered it was increased 25 mg. i hear and see people on this platform that use the same drug with higher mg. but i want off some of these drugs not adding to them. mine is also a seizure med and i take two others for the same reason. have not had a seizure now in months. wish i could give you the answer, myself i am taking like 26 meds a day and think i maybe need half but i am not the doctor and do not see the study on every med i take , wish you luck on your finding an answer, also sending a prayer for you too------------sent. Have a blessed day.

@kah869 - I've personally taken both 300 mg and 450 mg of buproprion (Wellbutrin). Neither dose has been a problem, after I initially started on this medication years ago and went through emotionally bumpy times in the first few months.

Did you end up increasing your buproprion (Wellbutrin) dose? If so, how has it gone?

That’s exactly the amount I am on and have been for many months without any issues at all.

Hi I did not realize the risk of seizure bumping my Wellbutrin up from 300-450.
I have been on it for about a month, and no problem except some weight gain, which is not typical but is happening to me, even though I eat very little and workout 5 days a week, from 1-2 hours. I am 70.

I was on Wellbutrin 350 XL for 15 years and a couple of years ago was increased to 450 mg. No issues. But of course that’s just my body. Good luck with your progress.

Been taking 450 mg Wellbutrin xl for almost 10 years with no issues that I can pin point. I have tried a few things like ldn for pain, I have Fibromyalgia, and tried Lyrica and also tried Gabapentin for pain. I have had side effects from trying various supplements or drugs I just named, besides Wellbutrin, and I think Wellbutrin may interact badly with these or others that effect Dopamine. But I cant be sure. Im trying to find someone, a dr. who can help me with this.
Good luck with the Wellbutrin. Its been very helpful, but I cant rule it out as something causing my sensitivity to these others.
