2x Efexor 75mg XL = Efexor 150mg XL?

Posted by silmil93 @silmil93, Dec 27, 2025

Good morning,
A couple of weeks ago, I was prescribed Efexor 75 mg prolonged release.
After consulting with my doctor, he decided to increase the dose to 150 mg prolonged release.

My question is, since I have some leftover 75 mg capsules (about 22), can I take two 75 mg capsules to get to 150 mg prolonged release so as not to throw them away, or is this not possible with the prolonged release version?

Thank you.

I did that when I was on Effexor XR. I did not have any issues. My only suggestion is to stay on the lowest dose possible that helps. I have found that Cymbalta at the lowest dose (30 mg) helps my depression.

I would send an email to your doctor and ask him about taking them just to be sure. It sounds like it would be OK but you want to be on the safe side. So contact your doctor first.
I wish you the best.

Yes; your pharmacist would confirm that for you. I hope your doctor warned you that stopping Effexor can be extremely difficult, so it's best to take only as much as you need. (Better yet, try a drug that does not have so many withdrawal hazards and negative side effects, which you can learn about on this website.)

@njoys I could not agree more. This drug is awful to try to get off of and the side effects are really bad…esp on high doses. I would try a different drug before using Effoxor
