Internal shaking when drifting off or waking up from sleep

Posted by kelgirl @kelgirl, Jan 2 2:06pm

I don't even know where to start. For the past few weeks I have been feeling like I am shaking inside when I lay down to sleep. At first it was just when I lay down, and then it started more when I wake up throughout the night. I initially thought the bed was shaking or it was vertigo, but the room wasn't spinning. It was like inside of me from the torso up. This alarms me. I had blood work pulled at the ER and even had a brain scan. I had an echo a few months ago (trying to normalize blood pressure- another story). All came back well. I changed a medication recentlty for blood pressure and wonder if its that. I have tried to explain this to family and no one has ever heard of it. Last night when it happened I quickly checked my heart rate and breathing. All is fine. I don't seem to be in any pain, but it's a scary feeling. If I sit up it stops. If I shift positions it stops. It doesn't happen as soon as I lay down, but soon after. I think I am overall in good health, so I don't know what this is. I am following up with a neurologist too. But it is so hard to describe to be. Once it felt like vibrations and other times is like shaking. Not in my arms, legs or hands, just upper body and head. I am concerned.

Could it be your heart beat? Most of us can hear, or sense and hear, our heart's rhythm if we are still and relaxed, and if the place of repose is very quiet.
Is this a tremor...usually with a cyclic rate of about four-to-six per second?

Kelgirl, yours is the first post that sounds in some ways similar to what I experience. I am fine falling asleep but am awakened some time later with wavelike sensations primarily in my upper body, arms and shoulders. I have felt similar physical sensations while awake which come from my fear of heights. Then my muscles start tightening to the point of discomfort. Sometimes I am able to get rid of these sensations by lightly pinching, pressing or massaging those body areas affected. If I am lucky it subsides. If not, I start periodic body jerking and my mouth becomes so parched that my tongue feels stuck to the roof of my mouth. The jerking can go on for an hour before it subsides and I feel safe enough to try to sleep. Fear has taken me to the ER twice with no conclusive results. My GP has sent me for more blood tests and brain scans, all of which reveal no pathology. I have been diagnosed with severe Sleep Breathing Disorder and am waiting for the full report on that before I can consult with my sleep doctor. In the meantime my sleep doctor has told me that he has not seen the "seizure like jerking" and other symptoms that I describe in relation to sleep apnea, which I believe I have. I am being referred to a neurologist and am waiting for that appointment, hopefully not too long from now. Not knowing what is going on with me is stressful.

I have suffered this, exactly how tough describe it as part of the Long COVID I ended up with a few weeks after I recovered from it last November. I have several other symptoms, the worst being sleep disturbance and changes. I cannot sleep at all without medication and even so, I wake up after 3-4 hours and rarely can get back to sleep. I used to LOVE naps my whole life... Now I CANNOT sleep during the day... Not ever!! It's misery - but the internal vibrations are extremely aggravating and I always get them upon waking... From my head to my back basically... But it used to feel like everything.... Just how you described like the bed was shaking. In the beginning, it would spike my anxiety so high. Now that I know what it's caused from, I'm a little less nervous about it... Just annoyed. I have to sit up or shake my head to get it to stop. I have heard/read so many with the same symptoms... Which I feel bad everyone is suffering the same, but it helps to know you're not alone!! Know that you are not alone in this either. I'm happy to chat anytime, should you wish!

I would suggest that anyone with body vibrations or shaking as described above, also check out the Post - Covid group. There are more folks there who describe these strange symptoms. It seems like really good place to connect to.
