Did I stop growing?

Posted by vamp14 @vamp14, Aug 8, 2021

I’m 14 years old and have been 5’6 for about a few months now and I’m not sure if I should be worried or not. I hit my first growth spurt back in 4th grade when I was 4’9 and grew, by the time I was in 6th grade I was 5’1 . Then 7th grade came and I grew 5 more inches. By the time the pandemic started I was 5’6. I started 8th grade and finished 8th grade (currently about to go to 9th) and still haven’t grown a single inch. The doctor says I have a lot of testosterone and should be exercising more so I did but no signs of growth yet. Is there a certain exercise or medication or any remedies I can take to increase my height or maximize it?

Currently I’m 4’11 in 8th grade, I am also 13 years old. I have a twin brother who is 5’6 and he hit his growth spurt and his voice got deeper and everything. In 6th grade I was 4’8, but although I’m sweating more and wanting to eat a lot, I don’t think I’ll grow very fast. Most of my friends are at least 5’4, I’m always the shortest person which kind of makes me feel unequal. Someone please talk to me about this.

Welcome to us here at Mayo Clinic Connect!
You mentioned that you have a twin brother- I assume you are a boy? Also, are you identical twins or fraternal twins?
We are not medical specialists here but we have gotten some knowledge from discussing problems like yours with other members that have experienced similar problems. We share experiences with testing, treatments and outcomes.
My guess is that you have not reached your growth spurt yet.
I assume you have a Pediatrician or Family Doctor who can answer your question by examining you and performing some tests.
Please ask your parents to arrange an appointment for you.
At your age there is such a big difference in heights among boys. You could even grow taller than your brother and friends.

You didn’t mention if you are a young man or young woman
Either way, I understand your concern. It does appear as you are past your growth spurt but in general there continues to be slow growth still.
If you want to find out if your growth plates are closed, you can ask your pediatrician or family doctor to order an X-ray of your wrist. This is a standard test to evaluate growth in puberty.
If you go ahead with this, we would like to hear about the result.

I am 15.6 years old and 178 cm (5'10). My mother is 5'6 and my father is 6 foot. Although all my other family members are quite short, my dad grew to be surprisingly tall. Although i was estimated to be over 6 feet when i was younger, i havent grown a single inch since june of last year. ( i was 5'6 march 2020.) June is coincidentally the year i started to start lifting heavy weights. I exercised frequently and even made sure to eat healthy. I grew pubic hair around (late 13-early 14) and i have yet to grow any significant facial hair. Is this the end of my growth? Is there anything stunting my growth such as my bad posture or my weightlifting? Is there anything i can do to help my growth?

Hello I am 16 years old my birthday is August 17th 2007 and I feel I may be having growth issues and am trying to figure out if it’s just late blooming, health issues, or just a unique case of genetics. I am 5”2 and haven’t really grown more than 2 inches since 12-13 in terms of height. My mother is 5”2 and my father is 5”8. I also weigh 130 (130 more muscular body I am a martial arts athlete) and my father is 170. My brother (not same father) is 5”8 and is 180 of muscle but probably would be around 160-170 without the body builder build. He was roughly 5”4 at 16. For a little background on my health and emotional stuff I went through a huge depression from 11-14 and was a obese fat 133 until 15 I dropped to 110lb and then over the last year has added roughly 20 pounds of muscle+ most likely a little bit of fat in there but I’m by no means fat I still have visible abs and my cardio is great. I work out regularly and my diet consists of natural foods and as healthy as you can get aside from of course cheat meals every now and then and maybe going out to eat 1-2 times a month depending on the month. So my question is: is there anything I can do to attempt to figure out the problem or solve it without the expensive doctor bills?

I think only a physician can give you a good answer. Onset of puberty varies so much that it’s difficult to give a good answer.
What we do know is that we’ll most likely end up somewhere close to our parents’ heights.
Have you completed puberty? When did it start?
I’m happy to hear that you are past your depression.
A doctor can order an X-ray of your wrist to see if your growth plates are still open. A doctor can also tell by a physical examination in what growth stage your genitalia are.
With this information you can get the most accurate prediction.

I started roughly around 12-13 with the typical hair growth in certain places voice cracks and stuff. My genitalia growth is probably abnormal for my height growth comparison. It’s bigger than I feel it should be compared to my height size so that is another concern for why I’m not really growing height wise. I highly doubt I’ve completed puberty but I don’t know how to tell to be honest.

I don’t think you are done with puberty either. To get a better idea you should ask your physician.
