Muscle Spams and Neuropathy

Posted by jeanniem @jeanniem, Jun 10, 2021

I was diagnosed last year with small and large fiber neuropathy. Originally, the neurologist said that he thought it was a slow-moving peripheral neuropathy. Since then, it has been suggested that this is an atypical polyneuropathy. And things are advancing at a pretty regular basis.

One symptom that has increased significantly over the last couple of months is muscle spasms. I am having them in my lower leg and foot and there is one spasm in particular that just won't stop. It is beginning to last longer and longer. For those of you that have neuropathy, is this a common symptom?

Amitriptyline works for me, not perfect but better. I can sleep and it stopped the constant burning.

I tried that medicine. It felt like knives going through my whole body. I passed out from the pain.

Yes, I get one spasm too on my left lower calf that lasts longer. My doctor suggested taking electrolyte replacement daily. I found one, KTN, it is a powder that comes in a packet. It seems to have stopped the spasms.

Where do they sell KTN powder? At this point, I'm almost willing to try hemlock if I thought it would work. So far, nothing helps. I have a new spine stimulator and we're working on adjustments. Fingers crossed. Does anyone else have continuing muscle spasms or enormous cramps in thighs and other areas?

This is going to sound crazy but I heard it from a therapist and it has worked for me with a leg cramps, cramps in my feet, etc. when I get a cramp at night or anytime actually,
I walk to my kitchen and I take 2 tablespoons of mustard. By the time I walk back to my bedroom the cramp(s) are gone and I go back to sleep. Give it a try it can’t hurt. By the way I do have neuropathy in my feet.

Welcome @gaylord78, I think someone else also mentioned using mustard for leg cramps and I've read about it but I haven't seen any studies done on the topic. If it works, it's something cheap to try and probably no ill side effects. My wife gets the leg cramps once in awhile at night when she hasn't drank enough water during the day. She uses the Hyland Leg Cramp pills and they normally go away within a few minutes.

I only have some numbness in my feet and legs with my neuropathy. What kind of symptoms do you have with your neuropathy?

I've found that regular exercise all but makes the cramps disappear. I go to classes 5 days a week, each for about 45 minutes. It really has been miraculous how something so simple can make such a huge difference.

I get cramps in my feet most mornings as I get out of bed, have to keep my toes pointed up till I get to the floor, I assume it is the neuropathy, also been getting spasms on R or L side of my stomach when I move to reach reach things or just stretch. Not sure if related or not. Bought some frankincense and myrrh cream, saw that it helped some people and not others, said takes a week or more to work, I have been using it twice a day for a week, and do not think it has helped at all, but I will keep it up for awhile to see.

You mean you actually take two tablespoons of mustard that you would put on a sandwich.

I haven't tried it myself but my sister has leg cramps and she swears by pickle juice. Apparently they even sell it in to go packs, I think for athletes. Can't give you an amount she just drinks some from the (dill pickle) jar and says it's almost instant relief.

I''ve had success with mustard, too but I much prefer just going to exercise class.
