Getting VA Approval For Mayo Is A Nightmare
My husband had triple bypass surgery and tons of tests and still having jaw pain - nitro relieves the discomfort. The VA in Iron Mountain MI, community care, states they don't give authorization and won't pay for MAYO help. They said they need NATIONAL approval. Marshfield Clinic is filling out a request for service to Mayo but MI won't commit. Has anyone else gone through this and where can we go please!

Local doctors couldn't find out why I was out of breath. Nothing was showing up in tests. Conclusions included I was out of shape (maybe somewhat), too heavy (not that much) and getting old (had to agree). Got into cardiology at Mayo. The cardiologist I saw was wonderful but he, too, couldn't figure it out. He even said, "Well, I can't shoot you or hang you. I have no evidence." He then said there is one last test we can do, if you're up for it. It was a stress test with catheters in and around the heart, with anesthesia, and was done in St. Mary's Hospital. There were five doctors (two were students) and five nurses present. They found I have heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, HFpEF. Nothing to do directly with my weight, fitness or age. I've been treated at Mayo for many illnesses, even stage 4 cancer. I can truly say Mayo has kept me alive. In my experience, Mayo isn't perfect but is as close as human intelligence can come to medical perfection. I thank God every day for Mayo Clinic.
You might want to rule out a Myocardial Bridge causing your SOB. Many cardiologists overlook them as benign which is far from the truth. Google Myths about Myocardial Bridges.
Best of luck!!
Never heard of it...could you explain please...and thank you!
@eddiereen Since your husband is a veteran and being treated at the VA, may I suggest that you contact the Veterans' Affairs Department in your state? If you are in Wisconsin, begin at https://dva.wi.gov/Pages/Home.aspx or call 800-947-8387.
They can direct you to someone who will help you sort out what your rights are. Treatment outside the VA is possible, and even common. Also, is the Cardiologist in Marshfield able to give you a referral to Mayo? I am not sure of the procedure when you have VA benefits.
Sue
Thank you very much. This Dr. Woods told us just what I posted...won't fly. He said since heart disease is "common"...we don't need Mayo. I will try that sight. Appreciate all the help...
Ugh! Heart disease may be common, but not every problem associated with it is common. Every body, every case is different. The Vets' service people often know exactly what "language" you need to use to get the help your husband deserves.
Will you let me know if you find a solution?
Sue
I'd be glad to "Sue. We have also contacted our congressman. Its sad that only "special" cases go to Mayo. Dr. Woods "won't fly" - with that my husband hung up and I stayed on with him, Dr. Woods. He was not a very nice person. I would certainly not want him as my doctor. Ugh is right!
Hello @eddiereen. As you mentioned, I combined your new discussion with your existing discussion about the difficulty of getting VA approval for Mayo Clinic care, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/getting-va-approval-for-mayo-is-a-nightmare/.

@sueinmn shared a few good resources, have you had a chance to reach out to the veteran's affairs department?
thats ok but i wish you would have put the new post in first...can you change and do that...please?
A Myocardial Bridge is a congenital condition where an artery of the heart, usually the LAD artery, is embedded into the heart muscle being squeezed to different degrees each time the heart beats. Some are long, 4 or 5 inches, and some are short 0.5 inches. But all cause various symptoms. Google: Myths associated with Myocardial Bridge. Surgery to correct is called “Unroofing Surgery “
Also, there is a FB page for Myocardial Bridge. You have to get permission t to join group.
