Any side effects from present flu shot with PMR?

Posted by lindaadel @lindaadel, Oct 17, 2023

I am wondering if I should get the present flu shot as I think all these shots especially the Covid shot which I had five may have brought on the PMR I really don’t know. The bottom line am I better off not getting the flu shot we getting the flu shot I really don’t know whatever you whatever your thoughts are I’d love to hear them!!!

@saltyg

I had Flu and Tetanus shots a week and a half ago. Now having a full blown PMR flare up (started a few days ago). Not sure if related but this is my worst flare since being diagnosed 12/22.

I should add we think the reason the PMR flare up is just showing a week and a half later is because the day after the vaccinations, I started a Medrol pack, for a different reason, but that probably mask the flare up.

It seems from the reactions I am reading (above and beyond) that a PMR flare can be triggered by various vaccines or in my case, COVID itself, or maybe even any virus. The question I have is, “ Why do our immune systems continue to overreact when there is an immune response?” I will also add, I went up from 4 mg to 10 mg of prednisone (my rheumatologist suggested for a week) for about 10 days with an amazing improvement, then down to 7.5, (10 days) and will start on 5 tomorrow. I am nursing a fairly bad cold so worry I will have another flare, and I also worry about my schedule of shots this fall. I guess the worst that can happen is I will have to increase my prednisone when, like everyone on this chat, I want to be off it. However, I do view prednisone as an ally on the road to recovery.

I share your concerns even though
I may be a conservative pro vaxxer.
Had my flu shot 2 weeks ago.
I chose regular vaccine instead of
recommended senior formulation.
Considering new Pfizer Covid in November.
I do not suggest multiple vaccines at once.
I would rather know what caused any reaction
that might occur.

Thanks for your response. I am a big believer in vaccines and like you, would never get them at the same time. Vaccines for Flu and RSV (which I had last year and was worse than COVID and resulted in hearing loss) will all happen within the next month or two. The COVID vax guidelines in Canada are not the same as those in the US so since I had COVID in June, I am not supposed to get the newest vax for 6 months. Honestly, I would prefer getting it ASAP. Very few masks worn in our province, NL, but an awful lot of sneezing and coughing happening around me…

Will never get a Covid Booster with all the negative side affects that I'm hearing about. Just had Covid on September 28th and saw my Pulmonologist in Philadelphia UPenn a few days ago. Hesitant to get any vaccines. He said I had Covid Pneumonia.....weathered the storm and now feeling better.

Originally on 60 mg of Prednisone for PMR and have been weaned down to 15 mgs but my Sedementation Rate is climbing. At 60 Sed Rate was 7, at 40 Set Rate 13, at 20 Sed Rate 32, and now at 15 mgs as of yesterday have not had blood work done yet.....my doctor says she does not go by the numbers Sed Rate, but looks at how the patient feels. Any thoughts about the numbers going up and how much it really matters?

Just got approval for Kevzara but waiting for my liver values to go down even more than they have already. I believe someone mentioned this medication earlier to me, and that it was controlling their PMR quite well. Anyone out there, let me know what pros and cons they have experienced with Kevzara medication? Still optimistic in spite of my numbers. Had a great day and night yesterday; made Healthy Eggplant Parmesan (no bread crumbs or frying; everything baked) at 2 am and it came out great!

joan7; getting my first injection of Kevzara next Tuesday. Had both flu and Covid booster at the same time two weeks ago. Got the RSV last Thursday, advice is to wait 2 weeks after other shots. No reaction at all to any of them, both my wife and I all good. I am 82 and while prednisone is magic, love it and hate it at the same time, if PMR is going to be chronic, prednisone for the long term is not the way to go. My doc and I are both former military and he is not afraid to try something new. I am his first experience with Kevzara.
Good Luck, John

John, let me know how you do with the Kevzara injections, and if it helps. I thought it came in pill form. My doctors keep leaving these minor details out of our conversations. So far, I heard several people being very happy with how Kevzara is controlling their PMR.

I have not experienced any issues with the flu shot, however, I was told not to get any vaccines until I'm under 20 mg on the Prednisone because they won't take. Just started on 15 mgs this past Thursday, and Sed Rate is going up (at 32 with 20 mgss). I do plan to get flu shot for the winter. I will definitely not get any Covid Boosters; became really sick from the Covid vaccines.

Good luck with everything!

joan7; couple of more things about Kevzara. It is an injector pen like an EpiPen. Administered every other week preferably on the same day and around the same time. Stored in the refrigerator until needed and each monthly supply is 2 pens. Check out the Drugs.com web site. There is an article Kevzara: 7 things you should know. Written on March 20 of this year, right after it was approved for PMR. Lays out upsides and downsides. My first injection is Tuesday at his office. Wants to observe for any reactions or side effects.
Regards; John

PMR on 25mg prednisone. Got adult flu shot several days ago. Mild reaction at site. Hardly worth mentioning.
