Side effects after completing Chemotherapy

Posted by kjc12 @kjc12, Oct 13, 2023

My husband has finished his Folfirinox treatments at the end of September. He is still feeling the effects of this last treatment. I have heard it can take at least two months for this to pass. Would appreciate any feedback on other’s experiences post chemo. As always, thank you for all your helpful replies.

Never give up. They say God only gives us what we can handle. Take this new development one day at a time. You will be in my prayers. This is what I worry most about with my husband’s post chemo follow up.As I tell him, never give up hope. Be strong.

kjc12 - I hope you are including the tens of thousands of medical professionals who treat this disease - who spent millions of hours in training to be able to help you.

I have read hundreds of threads - and cared for my sister. Two things come to mind:
1. You get one chance at treating pancreatic cancer - you should do this at a center of excellence that specializes - including chemo there - do no think that local chemo care is the same. Relocate to that center of excellence.
2. Start chemo as soon as possible following diagnosis - I know this next part is hard - stay on chemo for as long as possible - both before and after Whipple surgery. Prepare for a long battle with the right food, the right exercise, the right team (see 1. above). If you can affect the decision to continue on chemo - support it. Pancreatic cancer cells are sneaky, easy to miss, and must be killed - following Whipple, the only way to do this is to continue chemo - tailored chemo long-term, at a center of excellence.

I, as a Christian, had always heard too, that God will never give us more than we can handle.
But then I heard someone say, sometimes God does give us more than we can handle, but nothing He can't handle. God is bigger than Cancer. God can heal us if He chooses to do so. There have been pan cancer patients who have survived past 5 years. I know we have to be realistic. I know we can't tell God what to do; He is sovereign. But we can be assured, as a believer, that He understands our pain and suffering and that He is there right beside us in our journey. And we can be assured He does hear our prayers and that He loves us.

Sometimes I felt God has abandoned me even though I continuedly pray to Him, but my pain and discomfort still persists. I will continue pray for healing not knowing the results because He told us pray without ceasing. My entire Church Family also prayed for me, a great comfort and love from the Body of Christ.

Psalm 13 comforts me:
1 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look on me and answer, Lord my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,
4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5 But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
6 I will sing the Lord’s praise,

Does everyone after the Whipple get chemo? Is there anyone who did not receive chemo post Whipple? If not, why?

Please consider that not everyone "is a christian" while commenting. Posting quoted from one's religious texts might be enough to push non christian's away from this site - which would be a terrible shame.

The one thing in common across cultures and religions is the corps of educated, hardworking medical and scientific professionals. I am not one of these, but have seen - as all of you have - how intent, how caring and how hard working they are - all trying to make headway against this horrible disease.

I am generally in favor of someone getting strength from whatever source they find that works for them. One condition…do no harm. I personally do best with data, facts, information. Not everyone does. Each of us must find our own path. I am benefiting from many perspectives.

I think she or he should be able to express their positive Christian beliefs. If you are not a believer then take comments with a grain of salt.

Please don’t discourage those who need to or choose to share their faith.
All humans have a spiritual component or dimension along with the physical and emotional components. This is why health care facilities employ chaplains.

When hope is in short supply many will turn to their religious traditions seeking comfort, a renewal of hope, a miracle. Some finding none of those find acceptance of their situation and the peace of mind which acceptance brings.

In the early days of the Mayo Clinic there was no hospital. Seeing the need for a Mayo hospital, Saint Mary’s Hospital was built and staffed by Catholic nuns. These sisters integrated prayer and faith into the care they provided their patients. They understood the human spiritual need to have a caring power greater than ourselves which could make sense of our messy, sometimes painful, lives. Mayo continues the legacy of the sisters with prayer rooms, chapels and chaplains.
