All humans have a spiritual component or dimension along with the physical and emotional components. This is why health care facilities employ chaplains.

When hope is in short supply many will turn to their religious traditions seeking comfort, a renewal of hope, a miracle. Some finding none of those find acceptance of their situation and the peace of mind which acceptance brings.

In the early days of the Mayo Clinic there was no hospital. Seeing the need for a Mayo hospital, Saint Mary’s Hospital was built and staffed by Catholic nuns. These sisters integrated prayer and faith into the care they provided their patients. They understood the human spiritual need to have a caring power greater than ourselves which could make sense of our messy, sometimes painful, lives. Mayo continues the legacy of the sisters with prayer rooms, chapels and chaplains.
