I live in Peoria Arizona and I need to find a new pulmonologist.

Posted by jeanettegm5 @jeanettegm5, Oct 6, 2023

Have been seeing a pulmonologist for 8 years, since I was diagnosed with a mac infection and then bronchiectasis. Went first got the infection was on two anabiotic‘s for 14 months. Since that time I’ve been on one anabiotic for a month. It didn’t seem to get better for a while but now it’s back to Mac infection.
I’ve had numerous CAT scans every six months. Finally had a sputum test done when I asked about it. I don’t believe pulmonologist knows much about the infection I have.
I am so physically exhausted and lost so much weight. I am nothing but skin and bones 102 pounds and I am 5 foot seven. I cough and need to clear my lungs a couple times a day. I feel I have no quality of life, by noon I am completely exhausted and have problems speaking without coughing.
I have a nebulizer and do use albuterol and a saline solution. I had to research stuff and ask him about it before he gives me anything that will help, this isn’t right. I live in Peoria Arizona.

@jeannettegm5 Welcome to Mayo Connect. I see you have been visiting for some time, but this is your first post. If you have been reading about how hard it is to find good care, you understand that few doctors or practices actually see enough of us with Bronchiectasis and MAC to develop much expertise in treatment and management. That is why so many people end up traveling long distances for care.

After all these years, and the symptoms you are suffering, I agree that you need an expert on your side. I thought I would search to see if there is anyone near you - knowing that there are large communities of older people, and good medical care in the area, I resorted to searching for "Bronchiectasis Doctors Phoenix" and found this:
Unfortunately, Mayo in Arizona does not offer MAC & Bronchiectasis care. It is possible the Banner Hospitals near you offer MAC/NTM care, but none of there docs list it as a specialty.
Arizona Pulmonology Specialists (https://www.azpulm.com/) in the Phoenix area actually list Bronchiectasis as one of their specialties.

I know it may be some distance from you, but maybe it is worth a phone call?
Sue

I live in Goodyear, and yes there is not a MAC/bronchiectasis pulmonologist anywhere in the west valley. After seeing a doc in Phoenix, decided he was not working with me. Told me I didn’t need to nebulize. After being on the big 3 for 10 months, NJH in July took me off, weight issue, (5’6” 101 lbs). Now I travel to North scottsdale, 1 1/2 hours from my home, hopefully the new doc will give me better guidance than the last one. Her name is Lorie Loreman.

I just read back what I had last posted. I talk into the iPad and it doesn’t always understand me so it changes some of the words. I am 5‘6“ not seven. And I’ve been treated by pulmonologist for five years and during that time was on two different antibiotics for 14 months. Mac infection did seem to get better for about a year and a half. But it has come back. I use to cough so hard that I cough up blood or chocolate colored sputum. But that seems to have gotten better after I was put on anabiotic‘s for a month. A year later put on another azithromycin for the bronchiectasis. But after 5 days it had an interaction with my heart medicine needed to be taken by ambulance to hospital when I was out shopping thought I was having a heart attack. Luckily I wasn’t, just the interaction which was very rare and no one caught it before hand.
Thank you all for your information on where I might find a new pulmonologist who is more knowledgeable about the diseases I have.

I have just been diagnosed with Bronchiectasis and MAC by a pulmonologist in NH. We can not figure out how I got this. My answer was no to evry question they could ask for a cause.
We live 6 months in Maine and 6 months in Litchfield Park Az.
I was misdiagnosed by a pulmonologist in Sun City in April. He said I had stage 3 COPD and emphysema. He said use albuteral, eat healthy and stay active. I am VERY active and eat very healthy.
The pulmonology clinic in Bangor closed so I said forget Maine I am going back to NH where we retired from. I have an appt in Goodyear in 3 weeks when we return for the winter but I am not taking any chances of inadequate care.
I have contacted National Jewish Hospital in Denver which is the leading pulmonology center in the US, My friend in Az from Denver said she gets cheap ($50 to $100) flights to Denver.
I am not taking any more chances of not being treated.
Give them a call. See where it gets you. It can't. I am making a beeline to them when I arrive in Az.

Thank you for your recommendation. I am seeing Dr. Sodhi the Infectious disease doctor now my pulmonologist did refer me to him after seeing my last CT scan and the growth of the nodules within my lungs. Dr. Sodhi he is very knowledgeable and he started me on three antibiotics plus Ariksyce also so I am hopeful. And he is only 10 minutes from my home.
