Spotting Following Cortisone Injection

Posted by toromama @toromama, Feb 19, 2021

Anyone else experienced spotting following a cortisone injection? This is my second experience. Both times it started about 10 days after the injection. Just wondering how long it usually lasts. The first time was a number of years ago and I thought it only lasted a few hours. I'm now on Day 2. I'm 61 years old and went through menopause when I was 52.

So thankful I found this message board. I'm 68, had early menopause as I've not had a period since 1997. The morning I began spotting, I panicked. As the steroid shot I received for my back was the only thing "different" in the past few weeks, I began googling and found this page. HUGE sigh of relief! I also found other reference to this side effect, as well.

My GP hadn't heard of this side effect. I had a pelvic sonogram and a transvaginal sonogram. The sonogram tech hadn't heard of this side effect, either. I also had an endometrial biopsy. Thankfully, the biopsy came back Negative. The gynecologist did say to me that, on rare occasions, a steroid shot will cause post-menopausal bleeding.

My back Doctor that administered the shot was unaware of this side effect but has been doing some research and feels that he can adjust the meds used in the shot to prevent this from occurring again. He said that there is a hormone in one of the meds and he can use something else that will achieve the same results.

Hopefully there is an alternative out there so that we don't have to make a choice between bleeding and pain.

BTW, I'm curious . . . are any other redheads experiencing this side effect? We're known to have wacky responses to some things and I'm wondering if having red hair is a factor in experiencing this side effect.

How long did your symptoms last. I had spotting for about 5 days, but I’m still feeling bloated.

I 54 and 16 months post menopause. I had a cortisone shot in my hip on 9/18/23 and started bleeding 10 days later. Before I started to bleed I had mood swings and night sweats.

Im 67 years old I have had hip Injections. Last on was 8/10/2023. Week or so latter spotting. Every time this happens I have to do ultrasound then biopsy, which neg. I tried telling my gyno this happens after injections. She wants me to do a d & c now. I'm like no this happens only after hip injections. She is not happy with
me and sending me for another ultra sound. Check if endometrial lining thickened more. Said post menopausal bleeding not normal. So upset.

I had a cortisone shot on 9/29 mid week following the appointment I got such a hot flash that I couldn’t cool off. It was really strange Then this past Sat 10/7 I started bleeding. That shot is the only thing different. Went to the gyno today 10/9 she’s actually a Nurse Practitioner and promptly told me that she’s never heard of that, but I’ve been reading it all over the internet. I am 58 and went through menopause around age 49 to 51. I’m still bleeding enough that I’m wearing a panty liner and have to for an ultrasound at the gyno tomorrow. The first time I had menopausal bleeding I had the biopsy of my Uterus done. I’m really trying to think about this logically and rationally but I am scared, I’m freaking out because I don’t want it to be anything serious like cancer. I’m so freightened.

I’m worried as well. My doctor says it could be from the cortisone shot, but can’t rule out and anything else with out a biopsy. Mine is 11/6. Just glad I was able to get mine under general anesthesia. She was going to do in office with local.

It’s hysteroscopy with biopsy. They look around with a camera and biopsy sites that don’t look normal. I have high anxiety which triggers my chronic vertigo. It’s better for me to be asleep.

My ultrasound was mostly normal accept lining was 5mm, which is thicker than the recommended thickness for normal menopause women. Recommend is 3mm I believe. Not sure if the hormones in the shot that is the cause of the mildly elevated thickening.
