Suddenly have popping in throat when swallowing. Will it go away?
Hi. This morning I woke up with this weird popping sensation in my neck when swallowing, completely out of the blue and it’s concerning me because I recently had a friend diagnosed with thyroid cancer, so my paranoia is a bit higher than usual. I can feel and hear the popping when swallowing only when my head is in certain positions, and if I apply too much pressure to my neck in the area it’s coming from when swallowing it doesn’t happen. I have been sick this week with an upper respiratory infection and have been coughing quite a bit. I though maybe it could be a swollen lymph node moving against my throat when swallowing, however I can’t feel any swelling or lumps at all for that matter. It does not hurt to swallow right now but I worry that it will if it continues. In terms of symptoms from my URI…. Cough, congestion in both my nose and chest, sneezing, sore throat, plugged ears, all the fun stuff. Is the popping related to me being sick? Will it likely go away? Thank you in advance!

They told me it was a the muscles near my voice box that wouldn’t calm down, Aka it was swollen, They told me to take Aleve for a week and see how it’s helping, They didn’t do any procedures on me, Just felt around my neck and felt me swallow, They didn’t seem too concerned, I’ve been taking it and it actually has stopped the popping and everything else < 3
Was you pop in every swallow?
Yep! Now I barely have it!
wow Your luck with just simple medicine 🤗
Has anyone found out what could be causing this? I started having the exact same problem about 3 weeks ago, I caught a cold a few days ago on top of it. I’ve been to 2 different doctors and both of them kind of brushed it off. I read about the clicking hyoid but also read that it’s extremely rare. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
I had the same thing for few weeks and I am a strong minded person I don't give in z after trying few sore throat meds because it started after I had a cough and sneezing after winter and it gave me a sore throat and the clicking sound came under my neck left side of my throat . After two weeks I decided to exercise my neck and I did the kind of exercise Mike Tyson does you can check it on YouTube it looks hard and scary but it's actually nothing anyone can do it as long as you don't have a neck issue and right after doing 2 sets the poping sound just disappeared immediately, I looked for it all ways bent my neck swallow my saliva and water it's just gone. There goes your remedy too bad ain't getting paid for this but I will take donations 🙏
Can you share the exact exercise that you did link to the video?
Hi. I have the same thing for over a month now. I don’t hear a click but when I swallow I feel a pop movement. When I turn my head to the left I can feel it very well on my right side of my neck. I saw a nurse practitioner and she didn’t know what it was so she ordered an ultrasound for Monday. My doctor won’t refer me to see a ENT doctor until I do the ultrasound and said maybe a barium swallow test. I really want to see a ENT because this is stressful.
Is there something written in print to read what this popping movement is in the throat when I swallow? I would like to tell my doctor what it is since she said she didn’t know.
Mine is also on my right side! Feels like someone is thumping my throat from the inside when I swallow. My primary brushed it off but I went to urgent care because I got sick on top of it and they told me to see an ent. I got a referral from them. I’m going on Monday. Have you heard any results yet?
