Diagnosed with Uterine Cancer (Leiomyosarcoma)

Posted by cjacobs99 @cjacobs99, Mar 4, 2022

I was diagnosed with Uterine Cancer (Leiomyosarcoma) this month. Two months ago large mass was found in my uterus. Prior to that, there were no signs or symptoms of large mass. I received my Covid vaccine on 12/9/21 on the first day of my cycle. My period went from being very heavy to light spotting that month. This never happens. Ten days later I went into the ER due to severe pelvic and abdominal pain. A CT scan confine a large tumor (tennis ball) growing in my uterus. I have no history of fibroids and a recent Ultrasound confirms that. Less than a month later I developed Covid(delta/omicron unknown) and my recovery time over three weeks. During that time my uterus/tumor doubled in size, as if I was in my last trimester of pregnancy. A full hysterectomy was performed and biopsy confirms uterine cancer (lmsarcoma). I believe the Covid vaccine and infection triggered the cancerous tumor to grow rapidly in a short period of time causing the pain and discomfort to manifest. Curious if anyone else has experience with the impact of Covid and cancer.

Thank you. I'm not sure if you will see this, but you encouraged me. I was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma in January 2023, after having a total hysterectomy. It metastasized to my lungs, on my 2nd round of treatment. Trusting God and staying positive, all the way. I

Hi @marchelle, I was wondering how you are doing after your treatment. My husband lost his leg to LMS in March then found that is had spread to his lungs. He is set to start chemo next week where they plan to do 2 rounds then another CT to see if it is working. I'm praying that the treatment you received has worked for you and that you are feeling better. I'm very interested in the Covid vaccine aspect as we are suspicious of that as well. Any updates on your heath and the vaccine link?

Mot with Covid and cancer, but I just had my second surgery (previous one was the hysterectomy to get rid of a big leiomyosarcoma that had a myxoid component). This second tumor grew to the size of an egg in a month and a half. I’ve read that it’s a very rare, very aggressive cancer, the tumor is capable of doubling in size in 4 weeks.

@joan450 This is so difficult. Your post that follows this indicates that you will meet with the radiation oncologist on November 14.

This is so much to take in. Are you getting your care close to home? How are you feeling about all of this?

I am so sorry the late response. The doctor said that treatment is working, tumors are shrinking. I got covid the first week in October and they stopped my treatments until November 2nd. The doctor said that hopefully there was no growths because of me not having treatments for 3wks. I fully trust God.

Welcome @cjacobs99, I added your discussion to the Gynecologic Cancers group here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/gynecologic-cancer/
I did this so that you can connect with other women who have uterine cancer and/or uterine leiomyosarcoma like @rred @ventibug @naturegirl5 and others.

The exact cause of uterine leiomyosarcoma is unknown. They often occur spontaneously, for no apparent reason. Uterine leiomyosarcomas commonly grow quickly. It's natural to want to find a reason why this happened and to find things to blame, like COVID, lifestyle, past exposures, etc. But you can make yourself crazy trying to find the cause. Sometimes cancer just happens. It sucks.

Did they say what stage your cancer was? Will you need additional treatment like chemo or radiation? How are you feeling?

Please forgive my late response. I have been doing chemo since July 2023. The doctors said they were shrinking...then I got covid the 1st week in October, so I didn't do treatment again until November 2nd. I'm praying that it didn't cause any harm. Because it spread from my uterus to my lungs, its considered stage 4. Trusting God through it all. I have been experiencing severe leg pain and swelling.

Ov can. 3b , high grade carsinoma, mid 60s, Had historectomy, then carbo taxol treatments, all ca125 back to normal. first 35, then 11 and 9, it’s beating my feet and bones up. Thinking of quitting while I’m ahead. Reduced Paxil 25% 2nd treatment and numbers are still dropping. But she did say they could fluctuate. I’m concerned that this is all protocol, the atrophy, and neuropathy is irreversible and wonder if I should quit while ahead. Can’t believe how its aged me, and brain loss lol 11 days recovery after 3rd treatment, and my emotions not alway great, negative. Feel it’s best to hide than be mean. Wish I had a c friend to compare, I do have one in much tougher shape than me. what to expect, diet… I just had a terrible sweet tooth, not me and stopped.
Also plan to get Covid and rsv shot this week before treatment, any input? Drs. Didn’t say much other do them 4 days before treatment. Any input? Thanx a little fragile, thanx

I was diagnosed 4/10/23 with LMS. Chemo started 7/21. I’ve had 6 treatments and a ct scan. The cancer is stage 1 and in the vaginal cuff that has shrunk 1/3 the size. However the colon has moved over near the cuff and is endangered by the cancer. Radiation along with chemo is the plan for the next 25 days.
