Calf Muscle cramp

Posted by farahgeo1 @farahgeo1, Aug 19, 2023

How can I treat the pain that continues three days after experiencing a calf muscle cramp at home? I'm wondering why I'm still feeling discomfort after three days following the muscle cramp that occurred at night. This incident took place on the first day of my GM diet, during which I consumed watermelon, cantaloupe, and red dragon fruit, while consuming around 3 liters of fluids, mainly consisting of mineral water and green tea. Despite having already massaged the affected calf area, applied warm compression, taken a daily dose of 550mg naproxen sodium, and maintained proper fluid intake, the pain persists.

Hi @farahgeo1 The GM diet is a fairly aggressive weight loss plan and from you’ve said this calf muscle cramping came on right after starting this diet. Coincidence? Not sure. Even though you’re drinking mineral water, 3 liters is a significant amount of fluid in a day and can quickly flush elements from your system.
There could be a depletion of some of your key elements such as magnesium, potassium or sodium. A lack of these can cause not only muscle cramping but other health risks such as heart rhythm issues. It might be a good idea to speak with a physician before proceeding with this diet and possibly have a blood test taken to check for imbalances.
Is this area of pain hot, is there swelling in your leg?

Thank you for your prompt response. I am not experiencing any sensation of heat or swelling in the calf muscle area. However, during massage, I am able to feel bulging - feeling similar to that of varicose veins.

I’m thinking, to be on the safe side that it might be a good idea to have your leg checked by a physician if the pain persists. However, I found this interesting article on Missouri Vein center’s website which explains leg cramps and lingering pain. According to the article it’s not uncommon for pain to persist for 2-3 days. I think you might find this helpful!

I also found some information on the GM diet for you. There is controversy over its effectiveness long term and the safety of the limiting foods and the amount of water taken in because it can upset the electrolytes in the body.

There are other healthier options for weight loss if you’re interested. Quite a few members in the forum have benefited from intermittent fasting. Here’s a link to the discussion.

I know it can be a challenge to lose weight and we want to do it as fast as we can for that instant gratification. As frustrating as it is, more often slow and steady wins the race.
Have you tried intermittent fasting?

I would sure like it if you would consult with your doctor. I am not a doctor or any kind of medical professional, but if someone close to me had those symptoms, I would want an expert to rule out any kind of blood clot in there and any other serious reason for lasting leg pain.

Hello. I spent many years as a Sonographer (ultrasound technologist), your symptoms may indicate a DVT (deep vein thrombosis, also known as a blood clot). You should go to an urgent care or emergency department, & have that checked out. Good luck. Keep us posted.

I did practice Islamic fasting (eating from sunset to before sunrise) at least 3 days every month and have also tried 16/8 times intermittent fasting. It is just that I lack the discipline to do intermittent fasting regularly. Anyway, thank you so much and all the article pinned really helps!

Hi @farahgeo1, I just wanted to make sure you’ve seen the reply @amyb5 posted for you about a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot). Here is the link for you: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/916122/

It would be important for you to have your leg checked so you don’t run the risk of a blood clot.

As for diet and discipline, I hear you! Haha that was my challenge years ago too. It’s really tough losing weight.
I have been able to keep pounds off now by modifying my diet. For years my husband and I have followed the Mediterranean diet with healthy fats, grains, protein but even then I would cheat and have foods not so healthy for me.
About a year ago, I got serious to get my lipid panel under control. I dropped my daily limit of saturated fats down to 5gm and reducing excess starch/sugar from my diet really helped! My numbers plummeted…along with that I shed 10 pounds with no effort!
I read package labels to check saturated fat and carb levels. If I have a sandwich, the bread or wrap is made with whole grains and no saturated fats. Little things like can make a big difference.
I wish you well on your weight loss journey and hopefully no more leg cramps! Keep me posted ok?

All too many diseases and health issues originate in the most basic of our daily behaviors such as WHAT we eat (and how and where and when and importantly WHY cuz often it's Not hunger of the body but of the mind / soul / spirit /meaning-in-life). For myself I ask of me often: Is THIS how u wanna spend your time? because it will impact your tomorrow Too.

And how much we use body for PLAY, aka physical activity. Walk comes handy often but I also for fun wud go all 14 floors on my 80 y.o. frame, huffing puffing the last few for the heck of it finding my pulse going from 60 to over 140. Yes, I know my limits cuz I, like my cat, respect my limits.

And, it's mostly driven by the desire to be not wake up tomorrow and find: Damn! I wasted good part of yesterday WITHOUT thinking thru, aka CBT.

good morning farahgeo1 PLEASE PLEASE seek medical attention immediately. I too had pain in my calf thinking my squatting at work was the cause. when i couldn't sleep one saturday night, by sunday morning the right foot was cold: no circulation. I had no heat nor swelling in any area. Urgent care sent me straight to the ER they found a clot behind my knee in the Hunters Canal. i could have lost my leg or my life. Removed the clot, inserted a stent and now i'm on 2 blood thinners, an aspirin and a statin. before this episode i thought i was a healthy 67 y/o woman taking no meds. now i feel old, scared and my having a difficult time accepting this disease they say i have: PAD peripheral arterial disease... please seek medical attention.
