Posted by heritage1955 @heritage1955, Apr 1, 2016

Hi. I'm new to the site and am interested in treating osteoperosis. I'm 39 yo and recently had a bone density that showed I'm at -2.4. So, going through the intial "I can't believe it" stuff. 🙂

@migizii Hi, My endocrinologist wants me to take cacium citrate, not just calcuim I take 2 a day 1000mg one at breakfast and the other one at supper or you my call it dinner. I was raised on a farm. I'm going to send a message to my endocrinologist to see if I need to be on 1200 mg of cacium citrate.. I use Miralax for constipation and at Amazon you can get generic. Miralax you can get it to less cost. I don't use a whole cap of Miralax or it causes loss stools. Really lose. I hope this helps.

@lilypaws Most physicians prefer you to get nutrients like calcium from food. I track how much I get from food and then take a calcium supplement if I haven't had at least 1200 mg in a day. Too much calcium can be problematic too, it can cause hypercalcemia.

JK, you are right re getting calcium from food (for that matter all vitamins and minerals) but sometimes it is simply impossible. I have a lemon of a digestive tract and eat like a bird and I would have to be force fed like a goose in order to get the nutritional daily requirements. Sometimes you just need to take a supplement.
Also, on Prolia, the danger is hypocalcemia.

Have you been taking calcium carbonate? It is known to cause constipation. Calcium citrate is absorbed better and does not need to be taken with food and is much less likely to cause constipation. I have recently started on 250mg of calcium citrate twice a day. Since I live with irritable bowel-"C", calcium carbonate is a no-no. I am a finicky eater and cannot ever get enough calcium from my diet. I'm on Prolia so it's another reason for taking a supplement.

I’m on calcium citrate too and used to be on 400 mg 2x daily.....I have had to stop completely stop to try to readjust my digestive system. I also have lymphocytic colitis but that usually causes diarrhea for me....hopefully, not too much information🤪

Maybe for those of us who have existing g.i. problems, calcium supplements can make things worse. I also am a celiac in addition to the IBS.

@sue25 I;m glad I saw this today. Like I must have told someone I was on 1000mg 2 times a day. I sent a message to my endocrinologist and he wants me to break them in half and only take two Halves a day. Thank you!

@lioness Oh k. I got the message from @sue225 You are correct. I'm scared to take vitamin D because one time this year had twice as much in my blood. But I do need Magnesium. Before I even got yours or Sue's message I had sent a message on Friday to my endocrinologist and he sent back and explained everything to me. Take only 1/2 of the calcium citrate (is the best and what he recommended.) Well anyway from now on I'm slitting my 1000mg of calcium and take them twice a day. Jeanie Thank you!

@migizii It's never too much! Can you get back on the Calcium citrate? How are your bones? Have you had a Dex Test to see how they are, but sometimes they are not correct. They just said I was osteopenia, but I am osteoporosis. Had a 9 hour surgery on my back in June and the surgeon said my bones were soft. So now I have to do Tymlos an injection in my stomach every day. It's a small needle so it doesn't hurt. But I have to do it for two years, unless the surgeon puts me on a different one. How old are you? I'm 68 and I was taking Calcium Carbonate, which Citrate is better, so thats what I'm on now. Hope this helps and I liked your message.
