Replies to "Hello, I'm new to this group. My osteoporosis is not improving and after a dexa scan..."
I had NO side effects and the needle is extremely small so it's more or less painless to give. I was on Interferon for my systemic mastocytosis so giving myself an injection is no big deal. The brittleness of my bones had always been a puzzle. OLD AGE osteoporosis only...loving dairy products, weight bearing exercise etc. I am the youngest of 4 children. My mother is nearly 97 and in great health. I have 2 older sisters. My mother and one sister are now osteopenia. but being diagnosed in 2005 with my disease at Mayo and finding that my bones(after a bone marrow biopsy) have 35% extra mast cells making them weaker.
The only possible side effects I have seen are the rare jaw bone problems!!! You obviously didn't have any of those Dolan-----I think that is great!!!
None...although I do have alittle TMJ when I have dental work done but probably from years of chewing gum and clenching teeth. I had a lot more explanation and 'warning' for dental work within 3 months of my Prolia shot because of jaw problems.
To tmteach1230 - I am strongly advised to take Prolia - I am reading about all the possible nasty side effects, and at 83 really don't know what to do. I wish I could find some substantive reports that Prolia works.
I am 80 & a retired RN. I've been taking a supplement with Strontium in it. It strengthens bones and Vitamin K2 135 mg everyday. The K2 sends the calcium in your blood back to the bone. I've had two terrible falls & no broken bones. My MD said no to the injections & more calcium. Vitamin D also helps. Hope this info helps.
I took it 6 weeks ago and have regretted it ever since. It has given me muscle cramps, tingling in hands and feet, vertigo, nausea, jaw pain, lowered my calcium so much I have needed 4 infusions, and a lowered my magnesium to where I needed an infusion. Now my BUN has gone from 34 to 71 and I am told that because I am urinating less than I was 2 months ago that the prolia has probabaly effected my residual kidney function and I will have to increase my dialiysis to make up for it.
Were you on Boniva and Fosamax at the same time or one and then the other?
at 35 I was on Fosamax daily (for about 4 years), switched to Forteo injections for 2 years, back to Fosamax weekly. Then drug holiday..... pelvic fracture(5 of them), then Prolia (now completed Dec 2017 3rd year.) Hope to have DEXA scan in Dec and see what it says...doctor may switch me to Forteo again. I had great results.
I have been on Forteo since April 2017 and it is helping. But, I itch, a lot. I can't sleep from the itch. I think it is from the Forteo. Have you had that experience? If so, what did you do about it?
What are the side effects of Forteo?
