I am planning to refuse chemo requesting my medical oncologist start my hormonal therapy I saw chemotherapy effect on my case only 10% .Is any body refuse chemotherapy
@pinkybabar1962 in the cancer statistical world, it seems that 10% difference in risk is a lot. My cousin recently had the same predicted risk reduction from chemo that was suggested. She is fragile with immune deficiencies and we met with two oncologists who still recommended chemo. My cousin figured out there was a 3% redution in risk for each chemo infusion so she did what she could stand: 3 treatments but not the full 4. Talk to your doctor and hoping they can explain pros and cons and allow you to feel good about your choice. Second opinions can help too. Good luck!
I agree with @windyshores 10% is significant. I have IDC and my risk of reoccurring is 7%. If I do chemo it will lower it to MAYBE 6%. I am planning on doing the chemo bc the other option is ovarian suppression. I am 41 and premenopausal and think chemo is a better option. I am doing CMF chemo. Did they say what chemo you will have? I suggest you look up onco type scale online to get a better understanding of the risk of reoccurring range and the effectiveness of chemo. It may be clearer than what your doctor is describing.
I had mastectomy last year with lymph node dissection. IDC with 7 out of 12 positive lymph nodes, one lymph node showing extension.. My surgeon (and the tumor board) agreed that chemo should be part of plan even though the oncotype and mammoprint showed there would be poor response to chemo. I agreed-let’s throw everything at it-4 awful rounds of CT but that is in the past. My feeling was if the cancer returned I want to know I had thrown everything at it that I could. You know yourself better and you must make the choices you are comfortable with. There are no rights or wrongs. There is no rule book because cancer doesn’t play by the rules.
I had the breast cancer with her2 negative. Tumor was at 3 and 1 lymph node positive and 1 with a very small amount. No chemo. Radiation was to make sure that there is no more cancer in my body. I didn’t have any issue. Went to work and radiation after work for 6 weeks. Hormone therapy pills for 5-7 years. Hope it goes well with you. This is my journey.
My Oncotype is 28 my lumpectomy done tumor size was 1 cm lymph node not involved after 3 month MRI scan shows no evidence of cancer. My chemotherapy effect less than 15%
This is taken from breast cancer.org
‘ Recurrence Score of 26-100: The cancer has a high risk of recurrence. The benefits of chemotherapy are likely to be greater than the risks of side effects.’
Also in the scale i see the effectiveness is GREATER THAN 15% AND you still have a high risk of reoccurrence and should speak to your Dr about the chemo. (See attachment) If you are totally against the chemo than speak about other options such as hormone suppression. The only thing with hormone suppression there is no data to prove how effective it is… meanwhile with chemo it has been proven to be effective.
I think I mentioned earlier I am choosing to do the chemo bc it is a chemo ‘lite’ it is CMF and the side effects are so mild. Not sure what regimen your Dr would put you on.
I am not pushing you either way but talk more with your Dr and get a 2nd opinion so you are comfortable with your choice. In the end it is totally up to you what treatment you are comfortable with. Good luck!!
