Has anyone experienced Covid Gut? What helps?

Posted by robintromp @robintromp, Oct 14, 2022

I have been diagnosed with Long Covid Gut issues. Bloating started two weeks after I recovered from Covid and I am now in my ninth month. The GI doctors have tested me for everything and it all came back normal. Has anyone experience Covid Gut? If so, has anything helped or have things improved with time?

Hi,
I only took Saccharomyces boulardii, different brands. Seemed to work for 6 to 8 months, then not.

After learning about Vagus nerve , cranial nerve X, while reading about its impacts on digestive system , I purchased "Accessing the Healing Power of the Vegas Nerve" by Stanley Rosenberg.

Following his "Basic Excercise" to stimulate that nerve, my symptoms subsided in a couple of days.

Best of Luck. I'm on month 15 of Long Covid, and it is HARD WORK.

Same boat.
I had covid over Xmas. Months later, I’m now dealing w stomach issues of loss of appetite, rolling stomach EVERY DAY. I’m a male, weigh 190, earlier I lost 10 lbs!
That’s not good. I also may have had BRAIN FOG. I’m almost 60, and for a week or two thought I was starting dementia (?).
AND… lost my sense of smell to almost everything. But if they fix my stomach, I would be happy.
Just had blood work, stool sample…everything perfect.
Bleh…..so frustrating
***My symptoms also started 1 day after booster shot.
My wife believes this could all be in my head, lol.
Considering hypnosis, has anyone tried that?

Seems not many docs at this point can figure out what has happened to the immune system from Covid. I got covid in 2021, and was not doing too bad with the muscle pain and pneumonia, but in Jan 2023 got something, not sure covid, and now my body is messed up. My gut health not well, lost over 20 pounds out of the blue, and took an antibiotic for what my doc thought sinus infection, and I ended up with Cdiff still fighthing. Covid makes it hard to fight anything. My blood tests are fine, and endo fine. Not sure how doctor's can get to the point where they know what to look for issues in the body if you had covid. I hope I can get through all this and hope everyone can overcome frustration as well. Make sure your docs run Cytokine marker tests as well. If anyone can come with a good way to actually heal the gut with the correct foods, feel free to post. Not sure if probiotic pills actually get through the stomach.

My gut issues started a few weeks after Covid. That was 9.5 months ago. Upper abdominal pain. Right below sternum. I have had all the tests and seen 2 GI doctors. It hurts to eat or drink anything. Has anyone else had this? Cures?

Hi Ilean, my daughter has the same problem, when she eats or drinks it hurts. If she eats too much she ends up vomiting due to the pain. Have you found any solution to your problem?

I have had long covid for two and a half years. I have gained ten pounds and my stomach is extended and I look like I am eight months pregnant. Asparagus, cabbage, corn, cauliflower, and brocolli, cause pain. The doctor put me on Amitriptyline and Pepcid which helped with the pain. As a result of this talk line, I am now taking Cymbalta, which has helped considerably with pain. I still have considerable inflamation in the gut, but the meds have eased the pain. All the tests have been negative.

The most helpful thing for my covid gut has been to take a digestive enzyme, prebiotic and probiotic. It will take time to work but it has helped me a lot. I order from Klaire Labs as suggested by a professional.

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. My 4th GI doctor did an EUS - Electronic Ultrasound on April 10th. He discovered moderate inflammation all over my stomach and polyps. Gastritis is what I believe he thought the inflammation was from. He prescribed me Sucralfate 1 gm 2 times a day. Most websites say you should take it 4 times per day
but he said twice. It made me very nauseous so I started taking Zofran as well. It was still hard for me to eat but after about 6 weeks my pain was pretty much gone. The web says it can take up to 8 weeks to work. I still feel bloating and discomfort after eating much but I think that is because I had lost 33 pounds during the 1st 12 months I was dealing with this. It is miserable and you can’t understand until you experience it. I hope this helps. One other major thing is I went to a pain management doctor in December when I was down to 95 lbs and he was shocked at my size. He prescribed me one 4 mg pill of Hydromorphone per day to be taken 40 minutes before I ate. Then I would eat even a few slices of turkey and try to drink some fluids for hydration and I wouldn’t feel the pain and discomfort from eating and drinking. I gained 5 pounds in 4 months this way. He was a God send for my overall health. I saw 3 GI’s at that point, spent 7 days total in the hospital, 4 or 5 ER visits and not one Dr cared about my weight loss and dehydration. I have now gained another 2 lbs but am having to pay out of pocket for IV fluids. I can’t find a Dr that takes dehydration seriously enough to prescribe it for me so my insurance will pay. I don’t understand!! Best of luck to you and your daughter. Please let me know if you find a solution.

Thanks Ilean, it all started after she caught COVID in may last year, she has had so many tests done (ultrasound, endoscopy, tomography head MRI, infiltration + blood & stool these last 2 all coming out fine now, and the rest all ok. I took her 3 times to ER last year, on the 3rd time (August) her pain had intensified, they were going to send me home and I refused, thank god I did, 3 days later they did an ultrasound and the same day she was operated and had her appendix removed. After the operation, I imagine due to the antibiotics, her continuous diarrhea was sorted. But each blood work was getting worse (during about a 3 month period) and her digestion was incomplete. GI Dr didn't see it a problem. Went to a private GI and he tested for parasites, she was loaded with Giardia, this was treated and her blood work all went back to normal levels and digestion complete (strange thing, nobody else or the animals tested positive).
She is 24 hrs a day with tummy pains and headaches in more or less intensity, depending on time of day (she can't get up until about 11 due to the pain) and how much she eats. The Drs thought it could be ACNES (trapped nerve syndrome) as she has two focal points each side of her belly button where it hurts a lot more, and when they do carnett's maneuver it comes out positive. They infiltrated the 2 focal points, just caused more pain during 5-6 days.
I think we may have been in touch before, I believe you commented on my post of continuous tummy pain.
I do hope you also find a solution, and if you have any success with anything, please let me know. I'll do the same.
Take care and best of luck

Thanks for the information. My abdominal pain has been in the upper stomach. The discomfort and bloating is all over! Yes, I too hard a hard time getting out of bed before 11 or so and then the pain would just keep increasing until 4:00 pm. I called it my bewitching hour!
