Bruising unexplained
Hi, 37 female, recently broke out into bruises under my upper arms. They were swollen and hurt, that was less than a week ago, they're healing now. A few years ago I saw a blood specialist and found nothing abnormal. I've had bruising before but not like this. I'm wondering if it's something vascular. Any thoughts would definitely be appreciated.

I've been having easy bruising for about 4 years. This latest episode gave me the creeps. Last week the back of my upper arms started getting bruises. They did hurt and are going away. But it looked like someone man handled me. Been tested by blood specialist, nothing. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Some people say getting adequate vitamin C can help with easy bruising. I used to think I got enough, but when I started using a free website (myfooddata.com) --I use the 'recipe nutrition calculator' tool to add up an entire day's food as if it were one 'recipe'-- I saw that I wasn't getting as much as I thought. There is another similar site called cronometer. I've tried to include more vitamin-c rich foods, and sometimes take a low-dose supplement.
Thank you, I've thought about Vitamin C. I plan on starting a supplement soon.
Was your “ blood specialist “ a Coagulation specialist? There are around 13 or more factors in the coagulation cascade…. an issue with any one of these could be an issue. To test the functionality of each of these is quite expensive. A normal diet that includes fruit and vegetables would keep your vitamin C levels normal. Best of luck in resolving your bruising . Keep us posted
He is a hematologist and medical oncologist. Is coagulation specialist
different? I'm not sure all what I was tested for, but I have the documents somewhere. I'll see if I can find them. Thanks so much for the reply.
I take baby aspirin as an anticoagulant. I almost always have surface bruises on my forearms, and sometimes in other places too. I never know how I get them, because there is no pain associated with them. I do my own yard work, which is probably how I get most of them. My wife sometimes elbows or knees me in her sleep, and that can leave deeper bruises.
Yes, he should be very familiar with coagulation cascade. Hopefully, increasing Vitamin C will work, if not could be some rare genetic abnormality or disease that is causing this. Keep us posted if you find a resolution. Best of luck. Be sure your B12 level is in the upper normal range as low B12 can be related to bruising.
Yes aspirin will cause easy bruising. I was told not to take it if I could. I guess the smallest amount has long effects on blood.
Thought so. I'm thinking it could be something vascular...or just plain weird body, who knows! I'm just tired of getting those letters asking if someone is hurting me. I know it's protocol but it's just me, attacking myself.
My sister had a lot of unexplained bruising as well and her hematologist tested her for Von Willebrand factor-which she was positive for. Your doctor prob tested you for inherited gene anomalies but ask if he/she did those tests. By the way I have Factor 2 which is another clotting disorder-exact opposite of my Sis. Gotta love DNA!
