Constant dizziness/imbalance

Posted by Chester @chester, Jul 21, 2011

I'm a 47 year old male, and I've been experiencing a non-spinning dizziness/imbalance feeling for over ten months now. It all started after having a sinus and ear infection. I've had and MRI of the head, balance testing, blood tests for any deficiencies, heart tests, all of which are negative. I am suppose to see a neurologist next. Anyone else having similar problems?

My diagnosis was by the ENT doctor. The inner ear does two things. It allows you to hear and it helps you maintain balance, because mine doesn’t function properly my balance is off. The idea of the exercises is to retrain the brain and stimulate the inner ear, to improve the balance.
I have a post note with a big X on it on my kitchen cabinet that is eye level. I stare at the X and move my head from side to side to the beat of a metronome, which is going 120 beats a minute.
I repeat that moving my head up and down. I do this three times for a total of six minutes. I do the whole exercise again Two more times during the day. This for a total of three times a day, and I try to space it out equally. I saw improvement after about 10 - 14 days.
Hopefully this will be helpful for you. Keep me posted.

It is important to work with a well trained therapist in vestibular therapy—- most PT do not have the training to help with vestibular issues— Been dealing with dizzy issues for 2.5 years and only relieve I got was with an Emory certified PT and good ENT who found the problem—

My experience is similar I was so dizzy and I would get shortness of breath , my left ear was plugged , I couldn't sleep due to my heart racing, after several doctors blamed it on anxiety found nothing wrong with all the tests and several emergencies.
I went back one more time because I knew something was really wrong. They admitted me after they finally did a full blood panel and my potassium was a 2 the doctor asked if I wanted to be resuscitated due to my heart stopping , so I spent four days in the hospital (I survived ), sense then my platelets were high Seen a hematologist I am on HU 5000 & blood thinners. I am looking into the vagus nerve which controls all of our systems {verry interesting!! I finally received an upright MRI looking at an old neck injury... I have CCI which is causing my whole body complications. I am finally finding the source after three decades. I hope they can help you. I just kept on asking the universe for help. I know am at the point now were I need to surrender to the fact that I am really sick at age 55 I am sick in tired of being sick and tired. I also know that through my experience there may be someone I can help.

This comment is soooo... after the fact, but I too have been battling inconsistent imbalance , weird spacey head feelings that medical personnel call "dizziness", tiredness sometimes not long into my day depending what I'm doing, where my coordination decreases to the point of dropping stuff , just being clumsy in ways that are unlike me. If I'm feeling that way I find if I take a nap of about an hour and a half , I'm better after. After going to neurologists , ENT's etc, I ended up with a PT who was trained in "Vestibular" issues, not your typical ones , but the more involved ones. I will share she treated me for Vestibular Migraine. It did help. But that was a few years ago and I actually came to this site to see if I could find out further information in that area, but feel like what I found is that maybe what I've discovered can be of benefit to others on this site. It is not easy to find a well trained PT in that area ,as I went to two others for that and they had learned some stuff at conferences and did'nt really understand the nature of effective treatment. I am a trained Occupational Therapist myself so I have a good basic understanding of the vestibular system,. Anyway, the long and short of this message is to tell you to go to youtube and punch in this dr's name -Dr. Shin Beh. Hopefully this will open a whole new world for you. Also, if you put in "optokinetic training" , those were some of the things I began doing far into my treatment. I wasn't ready for those exercises in the beginning . Treatment needs to be graded so you can handle it , but not overtaxing the system and making you feel worse!! hope something here helps someone, as I know how frustrating it has been for me, ie being told a few times what was going on was because of anxiety!! Good luck and hopefully I will hear back from someone, possibly with even more good information!!

Could be a nutritional deficiency like B12. That's what happened to me. I hope you figure it out.

@carefor … I am so curious about your post!!! Even though I presented and stated I have Vestibular Migraine, cause treatment of that nature did help, there’s soo much more to this a feel. And wonder if the things you discussed could unravel more of my issue. What kind of dr came up with CCI?? I too have had trouble with potassium and B12 levels. I get so overcome sometimes with fatigue at seemingly not that taxing of tasks. Would love to hear more from you …. Anything you have to share to point me in a direction where I could go to find out more potential answers. Also , 11 years ago we had a horrible spin out in a vehicle but lived to tell the story… thank god. But when I put my story together I feel after that is where it began!!
Good luck to you and appreciate anything you can share!!!

And to all who may have read my first post about Vestibular Migraine and I said go to YouTube optikinetic exercises. It’s not just that easy … there’s a lot more information regarding how to proceed with some of those videos, ie- how long , how quickly , what you’re doing with your head while your doing them, etc.. please don’t feel like just looking at them are the actual way to use some of those videos!!!! But listening to Shin Beh and other videos by the 2 PT’s that you’ll find along side of his stuff , is really good information. Thames take that info to your dr and find a soecific PT with that training . A regular PT will not be able to treat that condition adequately! !!!!! Good luck!!

I had vestibular neuritis 9 years ago and altho the worst went there was still a feeling of imbalance although I never fell. To say “dizzy” would not be right but sinething close.

As I have always suffered from vertigo, although infrequent, I have now found a Physio who does an excellent treatment for vertigo/vestibular problems (not just Epply) and am feeling great - until another attack which hopefully won’t happen.
Find someone to treat this problem thoroughly

I have the same thing right now. This started with an acute bilateral herpes eye infection. I already have orthostatic hypotension (I hope they've ruled this out for you) and it's made it way worse. I have to squat down to avoid fainting (I've hurt myself trying to ignore it). Now I'm wondering if it's related to medication they put me on and I've finished the course today. Have you had a full eye inspection? Or any eye symptoms at all? I'm wondering if you could have an issue with a nerve of your ear or eyes. Just a thought anyway
