Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) Surgery Options

Posted by wpasternak @wpasternak, Aug 4, 2020

I had a Urolift procedure last February for my BPH symptoms and it was a total failure. The implants are still in position though. I am looking for a different procedure to alleviate my BPH problem and Rezum seems to be a good alternative. Can it be done considering my prior Urolift procedure. If not, what would be your recommendation.

Have had the Foley catheter in/out for going on a year. I have noted on some occasions, the urine flow has been too much for the catheter to carry, and urine rushes on the outside of the tubing. I asked the urologist and he said not to worry, that from time to time this does happen. Has any one had this happen, what causes this and can it be stopped so the tube will carry all urine.....annoying and also dis comfort.

I am not a doctor
I used tablet supplements for Prostate Cancer and achieved PSA from 6.5 to 3.2! Not done any cancer treatment but on Active Surveillance though. My Prostate also shrank

Update on my situation ( I'not vain, just for info for others). Struggled for a year with Foley catheter in/out. Had green light laser in December/2022. All well for about a month, then same problem of stoppage. Finally got to the point where I had to have the Foley re-installed in April. Just completed a Cystoscopy , and Dr. indicated that while the upper Bladder neck was sufficiently open and clear, however due to the length of the prostrate, the urinary track following remains behind. After consultation, Dr. decided that the Holep procedure would be scheduled. THoughts...I"m doing the look up on Holep now...hoping this finally gives me peace....been a long, long year.

Hi @cent66! I’m pretty sure we’ve been in the same string of messages before and you’ve probably read some of my posts about how I feel about HoLEP! Two words…..completely satisfied. If you have any specific questions, I’ll be happy to try and respond. My HOLEP procedure was performed at the Mayo in Jacksonville, FL. Where will your procedure be performed?

Do you live in Florida? If not, did Mayo have to repeat all of the pre-op tests done at home?

I'm having HOLEP at Indinapolis IU Medical, Dr. James Lingeman ....seems he has impressive dossier with HOLEP, etc. This was the nearest place to have this procedure done Quick questions, and tip of the hat for your kind help and patience.

Is there severe pain after the procedure
Excessive bleeding ( seems the hospital provides a hotel room , ( close) for any problems.
How soon before results ( able to urinate , easily and with some volume.)

Appreciate the help.

Hi @rfherald! Yes, I do live in Florida, I did not have any at home tests. I obtained an appointment through the Mayo Clinic, and met with the Urologist ( Dr. Dora ) at that appointment. I had provided MRI and sonogram records the VA had imaged on the prostate and bladder. It was decided at that appointment that HoLEP was right for me. All other tests were accomplished while at the Mayo Clinic the day prior to having the HoLEP procedure performed, and some the day after HoLEP was performed.

To answer your question about having any severe pain following the procedure…..I did not have any severe pain. I did have the Foley in place when I woke up. That was the worst of it for me. I was very sensitive and I was uncomfortable with that Foley…..but….it was removed the following morning! As for bleeding…..there will be some blood in your urine for 1-2 weeks….and I would pass bloody scale when urinating as well. All of this is completely normal. It went away in about 8-10 days for me. I was able to urinate a few hours after the Foley was removed! Because I live 160 miles from the Mayo, both the Doctor and me wanted to insure things were good before I went home….so I stayed at the Hotel for another night. I will tell you that for me, I couldn’t believe how well I could urinate on the very first day. I’m not kidding….it made me smile!

Great...been fighting this for a year....blockage, trips to ER for full bladder, Foley In, Foley out. Like you I musta got the sensitivity super cells, Foley was and is a full nightmare, can't sleep, can't walk..all painful...feels like a wire under my scrotum that constantly burns and aches. Hoping my results are good as you seem to be happy with the procedure. I am 600 miles from Mayo/Minnesota so had to do something locally. I think I will do the extra day at the hotel too..just to be assured I'm ok........Just hoping for some positive urine flow.....very depressing now. Thanks for the help......
